Choice Of The Fans - Your 16 Man Squad For Swansea

Home > Story Index >Your 16-Man Selection

It came as no surprise to see that all 122 of the people that voted wanted Roger Freestone to stay at the club. If that section of the vote had been any different then I would have assumed that Cardiff fans were voting!! Andrew Mumford proved equally as popular a choice with only 1 person saying that he should not be included in next season's squad.
The voting early on took a pattern of very familiar names and stayed that way. Chris Todd and Steve Watkin polled 114 votes a piece to also get the fans vote of confidence in their value to the team.
Joint caretaker manager, Nick Cusack was voted out of the squad by 10 people. Whether this was because they thought he added nothing to the team or whether it was because they thought he should retire is not clear but he comfortably earned his place in the fans squad for next season. He was joined in that squad by Gareth Phillips who polled the same number of votes (112) to show his worth to the team.
Next down the list was current captain Kristian O'Leary and the currently absent Lee Jenkins. Both have played well when in the team this season and it appears that the fans have recognised this and want both to stay. Michael Howard, despite recent criticism when playing as a wing back also came into next season's plans as far as you were concerned with 104 votes, maybe now that the side is back to 4-4-2 people are seeing his worth to the team?
Mamady Sidibe, Jonathan Coates and Jason Jones were the other three players to poll over 100 votes in this one and all would stay if the decision was down to you. Sidibe of course is out of contract and whether he will sign one, or whether we can afford for him to sign one is open to debate but you want him to stay and he is added to the list of 16.
As we got further down the list, voting became tighter but both Jason Smith and Terry Evans polled over 78% of the votes cast showing that it was a definite 'Yes' in their favour. Both have had injuries this season but clearly the fans want to see them back in the white shirt.
John Williams is usually a name that divides the fans and so it proved again on this occasion. 73% of you said he should stay and he got in as the 15th choice in your selections. I personally see John as an ideal player for 20 minutes, whether we can afford someone as a 20 minute player in a reduced squad is open to debate but I would keep him.
The final place in the 16 man squad was neck and neck throughout the poll between Neil Sharp and Steve Brodie. This one stayed open until the very last vote was cast, when Sharp was included in the selection and Brodie wasn't. Both can offer something to the squad and maybe the fact that the fans could not really decide is an indication that if possible we should either keep or lose both of them?
Further down the list, David Romoand Ryan Casey both polled a healthy number of votes (58 and 42 respectively) but neither made the list of 16. One more name, Richard Duffy, who polled 28 votes can be added to the 16 because he is still on a youth contract of which he has one year left to run.
One thing is sure, few people voted for the full 16 that were chosen, with most adding in at least one name that was missing from the final list. It will be a difficult choice if we choose to go down that road and I don't envy whoever makes that decision.
