Monk: We Can Take Pride In What We Achieved

Garry Monk was disappointed but not upset at seeing his side miss out on the Championship play offs

Monk refused to pinpoint one defeat on an April afternoon in Sheffield for the reason that the Swans' debut Championship season will end next Sunday against Blackpool.

Instead he chose to highlight the twenty draws that the Swans have obtained this season and wishes that just a handful had been turned into the victories that - on many occasions - the Swans really deserved.

Speaking after the defeat at Bramall Lane, Monk said “It’s disappointing for the dream to end this way, but we have got to look back at the rest of the season and accept that, at the end of the day, we drew too many games.

“If we had won five of those 20 draws we would comfortably have been in the playoffs, if not pushing for automatic promotion. Losing to Sheffield United obviously put the nail in the coffin but we paid the price for all those draws.

”We can still take a lot of pride in what we have done this season though. It has been a remarkable achievement and we need to use that as motivation to push on next season.

“We are gutted and this was the worst possible result for us. We knew it was a big ask for us to win those last six games but, with the way things panned out, we knew this would be the game that decided it.

“It’s frustrating now when we see the other results went our way. But, at the end of the day, we had to look after our own business and we didn’t do that.”
