Aston Villa 1 Blackpool 0

There are some things that have become New Year traditions like the singing of Auld Lang Syne, being the first through the front door with a lump of coal and Jools Holland - well you can add to that list Blackpool's annual exit from the FA Cup. Another year but the same old story but if you contrast how the Seasiders exited this year's competition, it was with a lot more credibility than past years.

With three changes and a debut for Mark Waddington, Blackpool had the better chances in the first half, with Andrea Orlandi volleying a Jamie O’Hara corner narrowly wide. Whatsmore it was the visitors who grew in confidence as the half grew older. Paul Lambert tinkered with his formation continually through the half in a bid to find a solution but needed Shay Given to produce a wonderful save from Orlandi’s deflected shot.

There was a standing ovation from home fans in the 62nd minute as Villa finally secured their first effort on target, with Carlos Sanchez shooting straight at Joe Lewis. Benteke’s half-volley was then turned onto the upright by Lewis as Villa threatened to finally emerge from first gear. “We only want one goal” chanted the Holte End. Blackpool produced a chance out of nothing eight minutes from time when Ishmael Miller’s drive was pushed over by Given. But Villa’s pleas for a goal were answered, just when the anti-Lambert chants were becoming more frequent, a minute from time. Benteke was played in by Sanchez and beat Joe Lewis with a neat finish from 18 yards, hopes of a replay for Blackpool obliterated.

Harsh on Blackpool but 3 points against Millwall next week will be more valuable in the long run.
