12th Happy League Week 15 (of 38) - Deadline 15.00 Saturday 20:28 - Nov 15 with 1208 viewsmfb_cufc

On yet another low scoring week, there were only eight 3 pointers predicted. Even the ten who predicted Gillingham and Leyton Orient to end 1 all, as this weeks most popular pick, were robbed of even 1 point, when 10 man Gillingham got a late winner. Three of those 3 pointers were found by TROPICAL_US, who was this weeks top performer with an outstanding 10 points. Those 10 points lifted him up six places, and into the automatic promotion spot. There was little change in the rest of Division One, as it continues to remain very competitive, with only five points separating the top six.
In the Premier the top scorer was SEVEBALO. Although it only took 4 points to achieve this honour, they were enough to move him into the final Charity Shield place. Again with so few points gained, there was little change in this league as well. Unfortunately three members failed to post this week. But with such low scoring, little damage was done.
The latest on the Champions League qualification is that the eleventh spot is held by OHORIORI on 56 points. But with eight others within 5 points of this score, this far from being decided.

THE TABLES (100 played)
(Tie-breaker: Most 3 pointers & then the first to post)

Week 15

WATFORD v DERBY
WIGAN v MIDDLESBROUGH
PETERBOROUGH v SWINDON
ROCHDALE v DONCASTER
BURTON v LUTON
EXETER v SHREWSBURY

Good luck everybody.

With 37 x 1pts correct results I am still on your tail Mr Haps.

It's only a matter of time before I hit my share of all correct scores.

Wouldn't hurt to chuck a couple of gimmes in there from time to time. Nearly every game it seems could go either way or be a draw!

Are you being serious when you say nearly every game could go either way or end in a draw? I thought those three outcomes were possible in every game of football ever played, and will be in future.

As I'm 11 pts from safety and tag you're it, you, well,...

First three same as mine, Rochdale, you decided Rovers would actually nick one,.. Burton to win? Yea really.. Exeter v Shrews, I think you're probably right on that.

But then

The Shrews 3-1-0 lately. Before that 1-2 v Chelsea (cup 4th rd) , 2-1 v Pompey, 5-0 Bury, York 0-1 Schrews ... this is one motivated bunch of lads.

You know what I mean. It's very rare for us to get a game to predict where there is a clear favourite these days. You could argue that picking matches where all three outcomes are equally likely makes it more pot luck than skill / knowledge.

So if we had Chelsea v West Brom as a fixture this week, what skill is required to say Chelsea will win the game. It then becomes pot luck predicting how many they win by. You had your "gimmes" with the last guest pick 10, with games like Portsmouth v Aldershot and Southend v Chester. Just that they didn't turn out to be gimmes. Just to prove any result is possible in any game.

For a game like Chelsea V West Brom someone with football knowledge will get the result right nine times out of ten for a game like Burton V Luton someone with football knowledge will probably get the result right three to four times out of ten, this would probably be the same for my wife who hates football and for an alien who doesn't even know what football is! If the games we're having to predict are between two evenly matched teams every week then I might as well get the cat to do my predictions!

The whole idea of the Prediction League is to get 3 points for a correct score, because the person who gets most of them will most likely win the league. The bookmakers lowest price for a correct score in any game is usually 5/1. That means at best you only have a 20% chance of getting one right. Therefore regardless of your football knowledge, you will require a much greater amount of luck. This is why bookmakers are always advertising the correct score market above anything else. The point I am making is regardless of whatever teams are playing, to predict a correct score is mostly down to luck. Because of that I feel you need to have a strategy with your predicting. Mine has always been never to back a game to end in a draw.
