12th Happy League Week 25 (of 38) - Deadline 12.15 Saturday 19:46 - Jan 24 with 2647 viewsmfb_cufc

The weeks most predicted result was for Fleetwood to win 2-0, with an incredible sixteen members going for this. With a second goal for Fleetwood not forthcoming, and nobody having the Gillingham, Port Vale and Yeovil games spot-on, this was a tough week for points. One person who didn't find it tough was mrhappy. Any thoughts of mrhappy losing his bottle at the top of the Premier, were totally dispelled, as he hit back with an excellent weeks top scoring 9 points. Those points were gained by having the Colchester 2-0 and the Peterborough 2-1, with three other outcomes. This was the only significant happening in this league, as positions remained the same from the previous week.
In Division One another good week from gsy163 is the highlight. His 7 points (including two spot-on) cements his automatic promotion spot. With points hard to come by there was little change in the rest of the league, though a solid 6 points from gerry_us continued his improved form, as he bids to avoid the wooden spoon.

THE TABLES (172 played)
(Tie-breaker: Most 3 pointers, and then the first to post)

Week 25 Fixtures picked by guest thrillseeker.

CHELSEA v MANCHESTER CITY (17.30)

CRAWLEY v PRESTON
CREWE v MK DONS
PETERBOROUGH v YEOVIL

Good luck everybody.

JR, do you happen to have the stat for most 3 pointers in either the Prem or D1 over time?

Anyone ever get 35+?

The Net, BluenWight and you are around that holy grail number (24, 23 and 22, respectively) of 1 spot-on per week average. (38-38)

Do you think someone can manage that? What are the Happy odds for total number of 3-pointers?

that is one stat I don't have - only the weekly points record - which currently stands at 17.

I think this year will create a new record in any case

Had to add, just saw it myself:

Most one-pointers, Wessex, 62 .. 7 spot-on
2nd most, Blue4U2, 61 .. 8 spot-on.

Noah the theorists probably has a take on this.

12th Happy League Week 25 (of 38) on 13:11 - Jan 25 by Barsidepete

JR, do you happen to have the stat for most 3 pointers in either the Prem or D1 over time?

Anyone ever get 35+?

The Net, BluenWight and you are around that holy grail number (24, 23 and 22, respectively) of 1 spot-on per week average. (38-38)

Do you think someone can manage that? What are the Happy odds for total number of 3-pointers?

I doubt if anybody has ever surpassed 35+ three pointers; but the current tables do suggest that TheNet & Mr Happy (and a few others) MIGHT hit that target if they maintain present form. However, I reckon (statistically) that is MOST unlikely and also that the titles remain far from settled.

This season we have (to date) these league leaders after 172 played (3pts/1pts/total);

Mr Happy 22 51 117 (Premier)
TheNet 24 53 125 (Division One)

If we extrapolate these numbers forward to 270 played (e.g. which assumes the same league duration/fixtures as the 11th Happy League) we may possibly witness this in May 2015;

Mr Happy 34 80 182
TheNet 37 83 194

Let’s now compare these with the end of the 11th HGPL Season (e.g. last year);

Noah4x4 31 106 199 (Division One)
Sevebalo 31 91 184 (Division One)
Gate16 23 113 182 (Premier)

Although the (projected) number of three pointers in 2014-15 is currently quite exceptional, the (projected) aggregate point totals are actually a little lower than for last season. Conversion rates of (1pt) 'results' into (3pt) 'scores' are hence very material.

However, last year, Sevebalo and Noah4x4 predicted correct 'scores' for 11.5% of total fixtures (31 of 270); when (to date), TheNet has achieved 13.9% and Mr Happy 12.7%; so the variance in this data item in isolation isn’t too great. Frankly, I reckon none of these all correct score success ratios would cause too much concern to William Hill or any other bookie!

However; this year (rounding to closest integer);

Example A (showing the leaders and some examples);
TheNet has predicted 77 (24 + 53) correct ‘results’ which is 45% of total fixtures.
Mr Happy has predicted 73 (22 + 51) correct ‘results’ which is 42% of total fixtures.
Noah4x4 has predicted 70 (11 + 59) correct ‘results’ which is 41% of total fixtures.
Wessex has predicted 69 ( 7 + 62) correct ‘results’ which is 40% of total fixtures.

Quite clearly, the difference between being top of the league and in the relegation zone can in the current season be almost entirely attributed to the number of predicted correct ‘results’ that one has converted into three pointers (and hence gained an extra two points). But now consider this table;

Example B
TheNet has converted 48% of his correctly predicted ‘results’ into 3 pointers.
Mr Happy 31%
Wessex 10% (sorry Wes, but it’s an important point of comparison)
But last year over the full cycle of 270 matches the league leaders achieved conversion rates of merely;
Gate16 16%
Noah4x4 22%

This begs the question; is it realistic for TheNet and Mr Happy to continue to convert ‘results’ into 3 pointers at DOUBLE (let alone TRIPLE) the rate of last year’s Premier title holder (e.g. Gate16)?

Then is it likely that Wessex_Exile’s or my awful run of bad luck will continue when we are hitting similar percentages of correct ‘results’? After all, the difference between a 2-0 for 3pts and a 1-0 for 1pt is merely ‘goal difference’. Surely we can’t keep "hitting the post"?

With another 98 HGPL fixtures still to go, I think the critical success factor is simply to stay in touch with the leaders as regards table A. Then when the ‘conversion rates’ (er….perhaps as much luck as judgment?) naturally converge towards the historic arithmetic mean over the remaining 36% of the season we will probably see a fair few changes to the leadership before the season is out. The 'scores' data this year is simply exceptional. I blame global warming.

I rest my case:p

Edit, Noah, your 199 is legendary. But also last season we had the no joker and otherwise like 14/15, you earned your 3 pointers, plus one-pointers same as this term. As Mfb has it .. not that he won't change over all around 15/16;D
