U'sual Champions League Semi-Final 11:51 - Apr 14 with 1786 viewswessex_exile

Following last night's 2nd leg matches, the semi-finalists are Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, Man City and Real Madrid, and we await the draw on Friday lunchtime.

The final placings in our competition are as follows:

Group 1
----------------------------
=1} Gate16 1/3 6pts
=1} Wessex_exile 1/3 6pts
3} Durham_exile 0/5 5pts
4} Gsy163 0/3 3pts

Despite drawing a double-blank last night, I managed to cling on to qualification, being joined in equal 1st place by Gate with the Benfica v Bayern Munich outcome. Commiserations to Durham and Gsy, and particularly Durham who picked up points in five of the eight games this round.

Group 2
----------------------------
1} Concordman 1/4 7pts
2} Jonestones 1/2 5pts
3} Ethicsgirl 0/4 4pts
4} BFG 0/2 2pts

As with myself in Group 1, Concordman also managed to hold on to a qualification slot, and as the clear winner of this group, despite drawing a double blank last night. JT pressed him hard with the Real Madrid spot-on Tuesday night, but likewise couldn't find a point last night to press home his challenge. Still, it was enough to see off Ethics (just - after getting the Benfica outcome) and BFG - commiserations to you both.

The predictions required (in due course) will be match result and one nominated scorer per match, with one point awarded for each goal they score (even own goals). As always, both predictions will be for the two 90 minute legs only, extra-time and penalties will not count. Needless to say, you cannot exact match with your opponent for either score or scorer, so get in early if you want that advantage. If a tie-break is required, it will be the U's attendance for the next game after the semi-final 2nd legs (which as things stand would be our last game of the season at home to Rochdale).

However, before we get that far, names must be drawn from a hat to decide who plays whom. Being in the hat myself, it would be inappropriate for me to do the draw, so I call upon Noah (as a former champion) to so on my behalf - in whatever manner you consider fitting and fair sir. As there could also be an advantage where posting the fixtures for prediction are concerned (and then immediately nipping in and posting first), I will also prevail upon your generous nature and ask you to post the prediction call on my behalf (I'll prepare it for you) at a time of your choosing.

Good luck everyone!

Honoured to make the draw Wessex. I'm sufficiently incorruptible!

I presume the semi finalists are therefore;

1. Gate16
2. Wessex Exile
3. Concordman
4. jonestones

I rolled two dice in a suitably dramatic manner and after ignoring enough fives and sixes (and previously drawn combinations) to lap a Monopoly board a few times the outcome was
2 v 3
4 v 1

Then if I understand things correctly; the relevant fixtures are;

26 April
Manchester City v Real Madrid
Bayern Munich v Athletico Madrid
28 April
FC Shakhtar Donetsk v Sevilla FC
Villa Real v Liverpool
4 May
Real Madrid v Manchester City
Athletico Madrid v Bayern Munich
5 May
Seville FC v FC Shakhtar Donetsk
Liverpool v Villa Real

If we set a deadline of 00.01am on the dates shown, I guess it's a green light for go.

Hope I have not created a new format Wessex! If the Europa League games are irrelevant we can ignore them! But merely two two legged ties don't seem enough!

Spot on JT, and many thanks Noah for helping out.

So the draw is as follows:
Wessex_exile v Concordman
Jonestones v Gate16

The Europa matches don't need predicting, we'll rely on the Champions League matches only, but the deadline can be extended to actual kick-off.

Good luck everyone

Shrewd move Concord, nipping in early with the 2nd leg predictions and scorers - well played sir! Now I have to hope Ronaldo and/or Muller are injured, suspended or dropped for the 2nd legs! Think the U's escaping relegation is more likely...

Indeed it is Gate16 - thanks for pointing it out. Your predictions, and JTs, have been amended, and mine will remain unchanged, though with Lewandowski as scorer to avoid clashing with Concordman's reversed predictions.

Concordman - as you have predicted both legs already, for now I have simply switched your predictions around, but let me know if you want to amend that?

Noah smarting from multiple relegations (four in one season) has received this PM message from Gate16;

Hi Noah, I've just realised that the first game is Athletico at home not Bayern. You may want to formally tell people and allow those that have posted to change their prediction for this game ? I have no objection to Jonestones doing so. All the best. Tom aka Gate 16.

Bummer, I can't even get this right!

Hang on a mo'....

1. I got them the wrong way round when I set the fixtures.
2. But Wessex (in his thanks to me) confirmed 'spot on'...ooops!
3. Then Gate26 corrected.
4. Given Wessex as the chief administrator and eventually got it right his word should be sacrosanct.
6. Then after all that fiasco; Gate16 predicted 1:1 so how is this cock up actually gonna make a blind bit of difference? Mr Happy, where are you when we need an arbiter?

Is this the greatest controversy in Happy League history? If yes, proud to have made my contribution!

Entirely my fault for not checking - apologies chaps - but all predictions are valid...and as things currently stand, only JT is picking up a point tonight for the draw, but still 17 minutes to play.

Apologies sir, I'd reversed your predictions, but not the goalscorer - mine is now changed to Benzema for the 2nd leg.

I'm just back from two days oop t'north, so will do a full update on positions after the first legs tomorrow, but suffice to say it's only going to be good news for JT so far.

So a quick update for all:

Wessex_exile 0 v 0 Concordman
-------------------------------------------
Despite much necessary chopping and changing, we've both drawn a blank, so everything is pinned on the 2nd legs, which are predicted as follows:

3/5/2016
Wessex - Bayern Munich 1-2 Atletico Madrid (Muller)
Concord - Bayern Munich 2-1 Atletico Madrid (Griezmann)

4/5/2016
Wessex - Real Madrid 2-1 Man City (Benzema)
Concord - Real Madrid 1-2 Man City (Ronaldo)

Jonestones 2 v 0 Gate16
-------------------------------------------
JT takes the lead with correct outcomes for both legs (though no points for scorer), whilst Gate also draws a double-blank. The 2nd legs are predicted as follows:

3/5/2016
JT - Bayern Munich v Atletico Madrid - yet to predict
Gate - Bayern Munich 1-0 Atletico Madrid (Muller)

4/5/2016
JT - Real Madrid v Man City - yet to predict
Gate - Real Madrid 2-0 Man City (Ronaldo)

So, just JT to go and we're all set for the first of the 2nd legs this evening.

Good luck everyone.

There will be a new thread for the final, but to complete the business of the semi-final matches, and without the need for any tie-breaks, the results are as follows:

Wessex_exile 1 v 2 Concordman
-------------------------------------------
Congratulations Concord, your two points picked up for the Bayern v Atletico outcome and scorer were enough to book your place in the final, despite my late challenge with the Real Madrid outcome yesterday evening.

Jonestones 4 v 2 Gate16
-------------------------------------------
Well done to JT, and commiserations to Gate. Though Gate scored points on both outcomes for the 2nd legs, he simply couldn't compete with JT, who impressively scored points in all four matches.

As a match-up between the lowest and highest Happy League point scorers who made it through to the semis, surely JT is now the bookies favourite for the final - but who'd bet against underdog Concordman in a straightforward two-horse race?
