What next for Colchester? 17:40 - Apr 27 with 1422 viewsGabriel

U's fans,

Written up some thoughts on the situation at the club - http://www.TheFootbalLab.co.uk/2016/what-next-for-colchester/

John McGreal the favourite to take over. Would you be happy with him or do you think the club needs to change its approach of youth development/promoting from within?

Cheers and good luck for next season.

Another brilliantly written piece again Gabriel.

You will be hard pushed to find many fans who want McGreal to get the job. We have had enough of these internal appointments. The problem we have got though is that Cowling decides what the clubs philosophy is. He wants a passing game, with academy players being bought through to the first team. So any external manager will have to go along with this, and there are not many who will be dictated to like that. Rumours suggest Teddy Sheringham is favourite for the job. He allegedly plays poker with Cowling. After his failure at Stevenage, not sure he is the right choice.
We will get money for Gilbey, as he is 21, and it will go to a tribunal to decide the fee.

I fear the chairman will continue to promote from within because it enables him to control all aspects of the club, even those for which he is not qualified. While he maintains this philosophy it seems unlikely we will appoint a manager who will have much chance to improve the first XI's performances because it seems a yes man is more important than a capable one.

McGreal would be a massively unpopular appointment, not because of any personal animosity but because I think a lot of fans feel as I do...we have a chairman who appears to have no regard for the fans and who intends to pursue his personal vision, regardless of the consequences.

Poll: Safe standing at football; yes, know or don't know?

Money for Gilbey might depend on where he goes. I vaguely recall an incident a few years ago when one of the Welsh clubs, possibly Cardiff, signed a young out of contract player from an English club and there was no fee due as it was, effectively, an overseas transfer and not within the jurisdiction of the FA as the Welsh club fell under the auspices of the FAW.

If he does wind up at Rangers this might still be the case.

Cheers mfb. The other name that's been mentioned is Danny Cowley, done a decent job at Braintree with not much money. Could be worth a go.
