Incredibly sad, but an inevitable conclusion of putting potentially lethal weapons in the hands of those apparently unwilling to differentiate between a genuine life-threatening situation and what appeared to be an inebriated man incapable of much in the way of harm...or at least that's what the witness statements appear to suggest. I have no doubt the final report will exonerate the police, they usually do.
