Super U's to prevail against the Reds on Tuesday evening at fortress WHCS 15:50 - Feb 13 with 651 viewsdurham_exile

JM’s Super U’s entertain the Reds of Crawley Town on Tuesday evening at the WHCS. Now it could be a case of the faithful bringing their boots, because JM appears to have run over several black cats and walked under numerous ladders; such is the current injury crisis at Colchester.

In truth injuries have become almost common place for the U’s over the past 5 years and much of the reason why we lost our perennial relegation battle from league one.

Every season sadly seems to bring more than the previous. Presently of the 32 players considered to be in the “squad” we have the following injured:

Dean Brill - injured in training - swollen knee
Richard Brindley - injured in training last week - calf injury
Tom Eastman - injured during the Blackpool game, now out for the season, requiring an operation to repair ankle ligaments
Frankie Kent injured against Barnet - ankle injury
Luke Prosser — long term knee injury
Jermaine Grandison — injured - hip
Lloyd Doyley - injured against Barnet - calf injury
Drey Wright — injured, undergone hernia surgery out for 6 weeks
Tommy O'Sullivan - knee injury — long term
Doug Loft — still weeks away from a return, achilles problem
Sammy Szmodics - still injured - foot injury
Chris Porter - injured in training last week - sore hip

Lewis Kinsella — after long term injury played 45 minutes in the 3-0 defeat to Man City U23 on Sunday

Sean Murray is suspended for a further two games
Macaulay Bonne on loan to Woking
Dion Sembie-Ferris on loan to Concord Rangers

Two of our finest and most consistent players are also carrying injuries; outstanding Craig Slater requires care and attention and the brilliant Owen Garvan need wrapping in cotton wool after each game.

That leaves only 16 fully fit players for JM to choose from, 18 including Slater and Garvan. Frankly the team are achieving miracles at present.

Sam Walker
Dillon Barnes

George Elokobi
Kane Vincent-Young
Alex Wynter
Matt Briggs
Cameron James
Dexter Peter

Tom Lapslie
Ben Dickenson
Owen Garvan
Tarique Fosu
Craig Slater

Kurtis Guthrie
Denny Johnstone
Rekeil Pyke - on loan from Huddersfield
Charley Edge
Louis Dunne

With 17 key games to play, 10 home and 7 away (excluding the play offs), JM will need every player to play his part in our promotion campaign.

Table as at 13 Feb 17

Doncaster* 30 63
Plymouth* 29 60
Carlisle 30 52
Luton* 30 49
Exeter 30 48
Pompey* 29 48
Mansfield* 30 46
Wycombe* 29 46
COL U 29 44

*Denotes still to play at the WHCS

Dermot Drummy brings his Reds side to the WHCS on Tuesday in what will be a very important game. We have yet to defeat the Reds in 8 attempts, but having laid the ghost of Crewe who had an impressive record against the U’s in recent seasons, there is no reason why we cannot see Crawley off.

Picking a team is ironically becoming easier because of the injury crisis. However, there is no place for complacency, the Super U’s must ensure that they do not fall over their children’s toys, avoid hair brushes, avoid opening cans of cola and do not get stuck in their drive ways when their electric gates fail or any of the other bizarre events that other professional footballers have incurred.

On a serious note, recent injuries have largely been pitch related with the surfaces becoming harder and less forgiving at Newport, Exeter and Blackpool. Even the WHCS surface (which was covered Friday night) was hard on Saturday. This weekend, the Crown Ground could be equally challenging.

Therefore, JM is likely to plump for the following in a 3,3,2,2 formation

Walker

Vincent-Young Wynter Elokobi

Lapslie Garvan Briggs

Slater Dickenson

Guthrie Johnstone

Subs:

Barnes, James, Kinsella, Fosu, Pyke, Edge, Dunne

Clearly the bench is a very young and largely inexperienced one, but every player will be necessary to aid the injury crisis.

The major disappointment is that it would be a desperate situation if the injuries derailed the promotion push. Momentum is key and our recent results (with the exception of the Exeter game) have suggested that promotion in one form or another is within our grasp this season.

I would like to see young Pyke given 20 minutes tomorrow evening to see what he can bring to the strike force.

The weather is improving after the weekend and the attendance, which frankly was poor on Saturday, is likely to be around 3,000. A victory could see us return to the top seven ahead of the trip to Lancashire on Saturday.

Enjoy the game.

The side practically picks itself at the moment. Let's hope we can come through tomorrow's game without further casualties.

The boys are playing with backbone which has been lacking over the last couple of years. It will be a struggle but they are capable of a comfortable win.

Sadly I wont be in this evening - something to do with a Valentine's Day evening meal!!!

There are some key matches this evening:

Crewe v Wycombe
Carlisle v Doncaster
Mansfield v Accrington
Notts Co v Exeter
Plymouth v Orient
Pompey v Blackpool
Luton v Hartlepool

Difficult game tonight but three points will set us nicely for the weekend game at the Crown Ground.

Walker

Brindley Wynter Elokobi

Lapslie Garvan Fosu Briggs

Johnstone Guthrie Dickenson

Subs:

Very sensible to rest Slater (perhaps an appearance from the bench)

Must be a chance for Pyke to get 30 mins second half

No more injuries please!!!!

Crap - Crawley have completely turned it around in double-quick time, and it's now 1-2 to Crawley! Plenty of time to put this right, if that's any consolation?

Terrible indeed. It looked like a team that had just been introduced to one another.

Just got in - miserable result, but Crawley have the Indian sign over the Super U's. WE have never beaten them.

Roll on three points on Saturday in East Lancashire.

Final result looked closer than the final outcome. After taking the lead, the vistors squeezed up and the game changed . Naive defending from corner and deep cross where punished, rightly .
Every play in the first half went down left side , successful at first, but became predictable .
Then struggled to change in the second half, and apart from goal and one goal mouth scramble, never worked visiting keeper .

More performances like this and wave goodbye even to play off places , sooner rather than later.

Poll: No half measure either 1 or 2 ?
