Super U's to overcome Accrington Stanley at the Wham stadium! 16:22 - Feb 17 with 677 viewsdurham_exile

JM takes his Colchester team to East Lancashire tomorrow to play Accrington Stanley. Now the plush exclusive Roman team bus was travelling North today, but any more injuries and the club will be able to downsize to a large mini-bus, such is the severity of the numbers who have been injured in recent games.

The team is therefore likely to be something like this in a 4,4,2 formation:

Walker

Brindley Wynter Elokobi Briggs

Fosu Lapslie Garvan Dickenson

Johnstone Guthrie

Subs:

Barnes, Slater, James, Peter, Vincent-Young, Edge, Pyke

The only possible change is the return of Craig Slater in place of Fosu, but on a surface, that is likely to be heavy and challenging, (north-west England has seen some heavy rain this week), JM would not wish to risk further injury and so he must stay on the bench. Lewis Kinsella still needs more time to ensure that he is fully fit and may well not be risked.

Now after that brilliant run of results, our last 6 games have been more inconsistent with 2 wins, 2 draws and 2 defeats. Accrington Stanley managed by John Coleman are struggling at the wrong end of the table, but secured a creditable 4-4 draw at Mansfield during the week. They also won at the WHCS earlier in the season. JM will therefore know that with home matches to come against Wycombe and Hartlepool, three points are crucial at the Crown Ground (now the Wham stadium) on Saturday.

Now I note that the press has hyped up the link with Kurtis Guthrie and Accrington where he was given the opportunity to cut his teeth in the Football League after arrival from the Channel Isles. They have introduced a “no love lost” angle to the connection which is neither helpful nor useful. The last thing we need is for some meaty challenges to target the promising U’s striker and it is hoped that the referee will afford him some protection. Colchester supporters will remember that it was Guthrie who started the Colchester revival, with his forthright comments after the Yeovil game which kick started their climb up the table.

Notwithstanding the injuries, the squad assembled by JM is good enough to prevail and will need to show their mettle tomorrow to overcome a side who are fighting for league points.

Safe journey to the travelling faithful.

Enjoy the game.

Gerry, if we do travel in a mini bus there would be no point in parking it therefore we must go for the victory!

Time to bring in Charley Edge into midfield . Good left foot, takes set pieces, reminds me of a young Wordsworth .
Cometh the hour, cometh the man .

Poll: No half measure either 1 or 2 ?

Worst refereeing display of all time. He decided Johnson dived in the opposition area so denying us a penalty. it was such a deceptive simulation he dived straight onto a stretcher and hospital. Awful decisions both ways, but the most crucial impacted on the U's.

We had enough dominance and possession in the second half to at least draw this, but chance after chance failed to hit the net. Poor performance by all 29 that featured (which includes the officials).

Can't believe we are still here only 3 points off playoffs...with a game in hand on 3 out of the 4 above us, including Mansfield in the last PO spot.

Need to avoid this turning into one of our slumps.

Sadly another injury today. Just unbelievable.
If we can avoid another one of our slumps and pick up points this coming week we can still be in with a shout at season end.

I think the current injury crisis will put paid to any outside chance we had of making the play-offs this season. In fact, with only 5 points gained from the last 6 matches, it looks like we may be starting one of our famous slumps again. Hopefully, we've got enough points on the board to avoid being sucked into the relegation battle again (remember we were second bottom in mid November!) but you can never tell with Col U!
