Owen Garvan departs the club 11:51 - Apr 11 with 1479 viewsdurham_exile

Disappointing news that Owen Garvan has left the club with immediate effect.

Reported to be for personal reasons, which clearly the club have been trying to resolve for some weeks now.

Owen Garvan, when fit, was a top class midfield player who played 53 games for the U's, including 18 this season.

Always had time on the ball, always looked for a telling pass and was a class act in League Two.

Very sad that he will not be at Wembley for the play off final this season.

He is wished all the very best for the future.

Explains his recent unexplained absence.

If the decision is really Owen's alone it is a brave one. Walking away from a club for personal reasons won't look good on the CV, assuming he will seek further employment in football.

Talented player but had recently seemed disinterested or perhaps distracted by personal issues. If Slater and Murray can be retained I don't think he'll be missed next season.

With the club in touching distance from the play off positions, seems a strange time to depart by mutual consent .
Seems he has let himself and the club down.

Without knowing the real reasons difficult to comment.

Indeed - lots of speculation about, but there are a myriad of possible personal reasons why he chose this, and it may well not involve the club at all.

Lots of speculation amongst the fans but only Owen knows the real reason. Best of luck to him for the future.

There is mounting speculation as to the ‘personal’ reason behind Owen Garvan’s premature departure from Colchester United.

On hearing the announcement, Ladbrokes immediately opened a book on the matter offering
Relationship Problems 2/1
Gambling Addiction 2/1
Alcohol Dependency 3/1
Dressing room bust up with the manager 5/1
Realisation that he was too slow to play professional football 100/1.

After consulting with another former Ipswich player, Michael Chopra, the pair decided to lump £5,000 (each way) on the Gambling Addiction.
However, the wheels were later to come off their ‘get rich quick’ scheme as Garvan revealed that he had in fact realised that he was too slow to continue playing after being outpaced by Ade Akinfenwa in the recent game against Wycombe Wanderers.

Brilliant! Wish I'd had a monkey on the too slow option :-)
