Expect the real Colchester United to turn up at the JCS for historic victory 21:19 - Apr 26 with 2949 viewsdurham_exile

Today is the 16th Anniversary of the last ever game played at Layer Road. I was there with 6,299 others to witness Stoke City achieve a 1-0 win in a tense and close fought game.

Tomorrow will witness another tense game. It has come down to the last game of the season (again). We need another Carlisle, PNE or Brentford performance at the JCS tomorrow.

Abridged Table:
4th – 9th:
MK Dons 45 77 +15
Doncaster 45 70 +5
Crewe 45 70 +4
Barrow 45 68 +6

Crawley 45 67 +4
Bradford 45 66 -1

Bottom three:

COL U 45 44 -21 (45 11 11 23)
Sutton 45 41 -25 (45 9 14 22)
FGR 45 39 Relegated

Never mind about the Sutton game, this is in our hands and we simply have to avoid defeat; any other result and a Sutton victory and we are well and truly in squeaky bum time.

Tuesday night is done and dusted we were appalling second half simple as. At half time everyone would have taken a 2-1 defeat but we contrived to embarrass ourselves with a weak and spineless performance to gift three goals to Rovers. Frankly this is one of the worst ever seasons in Colchester’s history, we have lost 23 games, it is simply awful.

So, for the final time this season we prepare to do battle for our survival in the EFL.

A decent crowd is expected probably about 7,500:

E4, E5, E6, E7, E8 limited seats remaining.
S1 Sold Out, S2, S3, S4 limited seats remaining.
W1, W2, W3 limited seats remaining, W4 sold out W6 limited seats remaining.

There can be no mistakes, no shocking defensive errors and we must carve out and convert our chances.

But who is going to start the game for the U’s.

This would be my team:
Hornby
Richardson Kells Hall Iandolo
Read Mingi McGeehan Fevrier
Hopper Akinde

I suspect however that DC will line up:

Hornby

Mingi Harbottle Hall Iandolo

Read Chilvers McGeehan Fevrier

Hopper Akinde

Subs:
Goodman Jay Richardson Kells Cooper Wilkinson Ihionvien

Good substitutions required early if all is not going well.

Weather at Kick Off will be 10 degrees Celsius, mostly cloudy with a 31% chance of precipitation and breezy.

Crewe led by Lee Bell and Ryan Dicker are after the three points or so they say. They will not want to keep the game too open and will equally not want to lose, so it could be a cagey affair.

However, after a shocker at Notts County and 45 minutes of hell on Tuesday we need to finally turn up and put in a performance worthy of a club that wants to stay in the Football League.

There should be no necessity for additional motivation. The players can decide whether they want to travel to Chesterfield or Gateshead next season.

In preparation for the match, I watched the 1957 version of the 3:10 to Yuma. A ranch hand has to escort a notorious outlaw to justice. Against all the odds he achieves it, Van Heflin is the rancher and Glenn Ford is the outlaw. Various versions have been made over the years but this is by far and away the best. The atmosphere builds as time turns towards the train’s arrival at the station and it is just the two men who take the last journey from the hotel to the railway train.

Unlike Crewe they do not hit the buffers or become derailed and the train steams into the distance.

DC and NC know what is expected of them. Survival and they are likely to be canonised, failure is not an option.

Scoreline 4-1 to the U’s after the real Colchester United turn up. Akinde, Hopper, Fevrier and McGeehan with the goals.

Bring on next season.

Safe journey to all travelling U’s. I’m travelling down early doors. Wouldn’t miss this one. Don’t forget get it recorded too because Sky have decided once again to show the great Col U live.

Enjoy the game.

Deservedly leading.

I want to see more goals second half.

Currently six points clear of Sutton.

The U's are staying up.

Fevrier, Mingi and Chilvers very good.

Read outstanding.

Kells superb. We have missed him.

Hi Gerry

After an early start and 263 miles I'm staying overnight in Braintree Before Travelling back tomorrow.

The draw sums up our season.

We dominated the game failed to score a second and the inevitable happened. A last minute equaliser.

Still we live to fight another season.

Now the hard work starts to sort out the squad.

Have a good Summer.

Sorry that I’ve been AWOL on here this season! Had things going on elsewhere but have closely followed the U’s this year and was at the Wrexham game a couple of weeks ago.

Goes without saying that I’m massively relieved the U’s stayed up. As you guys know I’m a lifelong Brighton fan and this has to be our Chris Hughton moment. In 2014/15 he came in, after ultimately being booted from Norwich, Newcastle and Birmingham, and kept Albion up. It would have been a crying shame if we’d gone down as everything else was right at the club and the future was bright - we just needed to stay in the Championship. He did the job and the next season we almost got promoted, missing out on goal difference on the last day and missing out in the playoffs - year after we got promoted automatically to the Prem.

I feel like this is that moment for the U’s. We’ve finally got the right men in charge, and everything else for Colchester as a city and as a club, with the development around the ground, is on the up. The future is bright. Attendances should go up with all the entertainment and leisure facilities, combined with the boost the Cowley’s have given us. It would have been a travesty to have been relegated. Now, we need to back the Cowley’s, let them work their plan they shared at the Q and A and lead us to promotion next year!

Up the U’s!

Attendance 6491 today.

If we challenge top seven next season then these gates are possible each week.

I agree 6,000 should be possible with the Cowley factor and all that's gone on around Colchester. I think the BWA also deserve credit for their hard work.

Sutton put up a good fight today and I feel a little sorry for them, but this aint ‘showfriends’. I hope they can come back to the EFL one day.

What’s going on at Solihull Moors? They are on a roll and look a good bet for making the league. If Gateshead’s ground wasn’t OK for the EFL, how the heck can Solihull’s be OK?

Ironic that that a draw keeps us up.
Should have do enough to keep a clean sheet.
Nothing to be grateful for finishing 90 th in the league.
But without Cowley intervention would have relegated before today.

Onwards and upwards U’s , has if no progression next season the trapdoor will definitely be open for us yet again .

The EFL must have raised quality standards as this kind of reminds me of the time that Braintree Town were in the NL Playoffs years ago.

I wonder what would have happened if BTFC achieved promotion and had an EFL Cup draw at Cressing Road against a huge club like Birmingham City or Leeds United?

Unless of course Col U would have loaned them use of their ground....

And that's a wrap folks, we can all rest easy for another summer.

Ironically typical that we'd end with another 1-1 (well done Gerry btw), and as frustrating as it was to concede again so late in a game, it was kind of hilarious watching Crewe pass it around at the back for the final few minutes, with the U's doing nothing to try and stop them. Me and Alfie had left Brisbane Road by then, but from the clips I've seen, it was reminiscent of those last seven minutes after Orient's relegation match had been 'abandoned'.

So, on to next season, a big clear out anticipated, and a genuine promotion challenge expected - you listening Danny?

Crewe celebrated as if they had been promoted.

Truth is they were relieved to have avoided Franchise in the semis.

Surely Franchise v Doncaster in the final.

Next season we must ensure that these bloody 1-1 draws are transformed into victories then we will be in the top seven.

And we want to give someone a real thrashing, we had 15 shots today and four should have gone in

Great atmosphere today and we deserved the victory 92 minute equaliser grrrrrrrr!

Hope you had a safe journey home Wessex

Best of both worlds for me… ….eventually….

I couldn’t be at the game because I was scoring the Buckhurst Hill versus Colchester & EE Cricket Dukes League Cup first round. Things looked bleak when the pitch was deemed unplayable at the scheduled start, a delay before more inspections, and I then faced the prospect of the umpires calling it off later, with no time to travel back to Colchester, to use my season ticket. Then the likely prospect of sitting in my car in a car park watching SkyGo, hopeful of an Internet signal on the edge of Epping Forest, a known Internet black spot. The U’s match being broadcast live was however a huge bonus as I usually miss the last couple of U’s fixtures and I at least had options.

We got underway at 1300, and I managed to concentrate on scoring with one eye on SkyGo thanks to the cooperation of my colleague scorer, whose diligence ensured I missed no crucial umpire signals (how unprofessional of me!!!!). The tea interval meant I could watch uninterrupted a full 30 minutes without the distraction of cricket, and I did watch the whole game again in the evening.

Colchester secured a fine win by seven wickets, thanks to staying out long enough in fine drizzle to pass the twenty overs required to constitute a result and exceed the DLS target by 24 runs. A couple of wickets might have mathematically swung DLS in favour of the home side, but eventually the downpour ended proceedings, by which time other U’s fans were celebrating in the pubs.

I drove back elated, given the Colchester double (yes, I know the U’s drew), after weeks of Saturday stress. I had been grieving for a week after my relegation from the HGPL, and I hadn’t felt so uplifted in months. Focus now is on cricket, and the Essex Premier League and Cup.

It’s always free admission in Castle Park where the refurbished and comfortable pavilion bar offers decent and inexpensive ( bottled) real ale, plus the return of the popular cricket & beer festival in July. If you are now at a loose end on a Saturday, you will all be made welcome. The quality of local Premier League cricket is remarkable.

Wasn't the ground. Gateshead lease from Council and they must have a 10 year lease which the Council for whatever reason wasn't able/prepared to give. Very sad state of affairs.
As regards our gates if we could get 6000 every game it would give a huge boost to the clubs budget. The Cowley's did that at Lincoln so why not is?
It was good to watch the U's on Sky here in Spain as was able to escape in good time from my commitment and drive the 2.5 hours home to arrive ten minutes after the start. Drank tea throughout and consumed complete box of Jaffa cakes but hey ho we made it.
Was heartened by DC's interview and look forward to the summer where we will see a number of ins and outs although not sure that many of the existing squad are at contract end. Be good to know.

Interesting that the pundits and City all moaning about the City Ground pitch today.

It was too dry apparently!!!!

In fairness I thought the JCS pitch yesterday was very good.
A little bit of sand but the surface was true and less threadbare than in previous weeks
