RamZone Special: Oliver Dean's World Cup Diary - Part 2
RamZone Special: Oliver Dean's World Cup Diary - Part 2
Tuesday, 22nd Jun 2010 06:34 by Oliver Dean

I think it's fair to say that watching England play in the World Cup has not been the highlight of the trip so far.

I had a great view from my seat in the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town but the England performance against Algeria was dreadful.

There was a great deal of discontent among the England supporters towards the end of the match. A lot of people were very annoyed

And a lot was said afterwards about Wayne Rooney's comments to the TV camera as he came off the pitch, referring to the booing of the England team.

But England fans have shown a great commitment to get to these games. I myself have shelled out something in the region of £4,000 and the tickets for the England games alone are around £100. We have the right to boo.

I wish Wayne Rooney had put as much passion into the game as he showed afterwards in that moment as he came off the pitch.

Now I hope he takes out all his frustration on Slovenia in our final group game.

But I have enjoyed Cape Town, it's a beautiful city.

There were England fans everywhere before the game against Algeria and the build-up was great. I think a lot of fans have used Cape Town as their base.

As for the Green Point Stadium itself, it was awesome.

In fact everything was incredible until the referee blew the whistle and the football started!

While the Cape Town experience was memorable, getting there was a challenge.

We left Johannesburg at 5am and it was an 18 hour drive to Cape Town, finally arriving at 11pm.

There were five of us in the car and we took it in turns driving, although one of the lads doesn't have a licence so time at the wheel was actually split between four people.

We were shattered after the drive and we hope that we don't have to do it again – although we might have to if England only qualify for the next phase by finishing second in Group C. If they finish as runners-up and then manage to get through to the quarter-finals, then we will have to travel back to Cape Town.

So we are all praying that England win Group C so we can stay at our Johannesburg base for the first two knockout games.

Now we are heading to Port Elizabeth for the game against Slovenia on Wednesday.

We are taking the garden route over to Port Elizabeth, which will be a three-day drive, and we are stopping along the way to do a shark dive! We are going down in a cage and hope to see a great white shark.

The whole trip has been a great experience so far and one of the best games I have seen was the match between Serbia and Ghana.

The atmosphere as Ghana won was very special, with lots of singing and dancing.

The following day we watched Holland beat Denmark, which wasn't as good, but being inside the Soccer City stadium was incredible. It's absolutely massive!

So there have been a lot of highlights so far but, sadly, England haven't provided any on the pitch.

I hope that changes on Wednesday.

Oliver Dean is documenting his journey to the World Cup regularly in the DET and we thank him for allowing us to re-print his diary columns here on RamZone!.... Keep an eye out for his next diary entry soon!

Superb stuff, Oliver - and here's hoping you have more to cheer on Wednesday.

Can't imagine the level of frustration of the England fans there on the spot- it's bad enough cursing at the TV screen back here at home!
