Tickle Tackle - Going For The One
Thu 30th Oct 2008 16:37 by Steve Tickle

Whichever division we may play in, if it happens to be the same one as our red neighbours from down the A52 then the two fixtures against them are arguably the biggest ones of the season.

It doesn't really matter if we win the league, the cup, both or if as last season, we're relegated, a good win (or in fact any win) against the red dogs will be savoured and be constantly referred to in pubs and workplaces around the area for years to come. Those two games will have been the first ones looked for and highlighted for many when when the fixtures were published .

Personally, I've never looked forward to those games at all. The prospect of losing was too much to contemplate. Regardless of the comparative abilities of each team, form often seemed to go out of the window - and then there was always the possibility that individual mistakes, whether by players or officials, could settle the destination of the points. I have on the other hand, enormously enjoyed the following week when we've given them a good pasting.

And so it is that this weekend, the red dogs will be the visitors at Pride Park. A good midweek win over Norwich will have done the Rams' confidence no harm whatsoever and an unexpected win for Forest at Palace has probably kept manager colin Calderwood in a job - at least for a few more days. Many Rams fans were a little worried that he might be given the old heave-ho before Sunday's game thus bringing into play that phenomenon where managerless clubs suddenly find a bit of form.

And of course there's another well established phenomenon, that of ex-players coming back to haunt their previous club. I'm sure Kris Commons is itching to put in a match winning against his old club. We've been on the wrong end of ex-players match winning performances all too often so let's hope Sunday sees us smiling.

As for me, I'm more than confident we can give them a good hiding - but I won't be able to relax until that final whistle has blown and we have the points in the bag.
