The Rams Once Again Choose Savage Captain
Tue 20th Jul 2010 15:21 by Daniel J Sewart

Robbie Savage has been announced as Derby County Captain once again for the forthcoming 2010/11 campaign.

Although not a great surprise many fans had been hoping of a changing of the guard as the Rams look to build for the future. Shaun Barker would be the Captain of choice for many Rams fans but will no doubt be bestowed with the honour next season, if not earlier.

It seems the outspoken and controversial Savage will once again ply his trade on match day adorning the black and white arm-band.

At the tender age of 35 although maligned by many supporters, did what many Rams players can only dream of by appearing in all 46 Championship fixtures last season while only missing out on a starting position once.

Shaun Barker was named as Savage’s vice-captain and Stephen Bywater will be third in line to the throne.

Savage spoke to BBC Radio Derby about his re-appointment:

"That is a huge boost. I must be in his (Nigel Clough's) plans again which I think I deserve after last season."

Modest as always, we can only hope he will make the ball talk on the field as much as he does off it!

A retrograde step. I rhought NC had named Barker at the end of the season?

Are Premier League Blackpool buying Shaun back?

It's fine to count your appearances, Robbie - but we had a pedestrian midfield that didn't defend and couldn't provide enough forward ammunition.

We need a leader whose *productive* peformances, and not media spats, speak for himself and the team.

Measured as a captain in goals for and against, wins and points on the board, Savage is mediocre at best, and is holding the team back IMHO - and at great expense.
