Should Clough Cash In On Davies With Lions On The Prowl?
Should Clough Cash In On Davies With Lions On The Prowl?

Millwall manager Kenny Jackett has admitted he is searching to replace striker Steve Morison who has left the club for Norwich. One of the players he has in sights is Steve Davies but Derby apparently denies they are interested in selling.

In 2010/11, Steve Morison was able to tally up 40 goals over two seasons for the Lions and they are desperate to replace that fire power after he recently joined the newly promoted Canaries in the Premier League.

With a reported £2.8million in their pockets from the deal, many rumours have surfaced in who Millwall may spend it on but Blackpool’s Marlon Harewood and Derby‘s Steve Davies have been the loudest so far.

Jackett was happy to admit he is actively searching for firepower:

"I've been on the look-out for new faces for some time. The fact Steve has gone just means we need another one. We will have to be patient. Our position in the Championship means players; clubs and agents look at us and compare our resources with those of other clubs around us.”

"We won't be paying inflated wages but we will get the right people for the job."

After the rumour was initially announced various reports suggested DCFC had denied any interest in selling Davies but interestingly no official comment was made. Of course there was really no need to make one in response to a rumour but if in fact they denied any temptation to sell, why not at least make comment and stomp on the speculation.

Even though Davies return to fitness resulted in some good form with 5 goals in his 13 matches, perhaps the Rams may look to cash in on the injury prone hit man. With Davies recent record for ailments you could forgive the club for wincing every time he is challenged during a match and perhaps may decide to try and shed those likely to be sidelined.

The other thing to consider is Nigel has stated he is looking for an out and out centre forward. Ward, Robinson, Cywka and the soon to be signed Maguire are all more than capable of filling the second fiddle role to a powerful front man so perhaps Clough might consider boosting his spending power by cashing in on Davies.

Such a move would be a gamble but one that may be worth the risk if a decent fee was on offer from Millwall.

Davies is a forward that will get you goals but next to an out and out centre forward I would prefer Ward, Cywka or Maguire providing pace and picking up the crumbs. Of course even if they were first choice, Davies could also be deployed out wide where I believe in the past he played some of his best football for the Rams.

Time will tell if talk becomes action but what at first seemed to me a straight forward ‘hands off’ - on second thoughts might not be such bad business - if the price is right and any fee was re-invested.

Either way I don’t think it would be a bad move as Davies is a good player to have on the books and if there was one thing that was apparent last season, Derby need depth.

Selling your better players won’t achieve that, unless of course you bring in better ones to replace them!

In that statement lays the answer to the question, a question that has been incorrectly answered by Derby on too many occasions.

Should the Rams cash in on Davies or stick with Steve?

Well, Nigel recruited David Martin from the Lions a year ago and then failed to deploy him much.

Maybe we can recoup that wasted fee by selling Davies?
