tRAMsfer news: Blackpool Out As Pompey Pounce For Varney!
Monday, 27th Jun 2011 00:12 by Daniel J Sewart

As reported last week, Seasiders' manager Ian Holloway did not activate an option to sign Luke Varney for £250,000 which left the door open for Portsmouth who have reportedly splashed the cash for the striker.

Although Luke impressed during his stint by the water with 5 goals in 30 appearances, word out of Blackpool suggests that like the Rams, they felt the wages Luke Varney commands are not viable for a Championship club to have on their books.

Portsmouth on the other hand have seen things differently and are believed to have tabled a bid over the weekend for £750,000, rising to as much as £1 million with appearances.

It appears that only the player agreeing to terms and a medical stand in the way of Varney making the switch to Pompey and all being well we cant expect an official announcement very soon.

After not feeling the love at the Rams from Nigel Clough and recently proclaiming his desire to become a Blackpool player, Varney quickly re-directed his love to Pompey when interviewed by ‘portsmouth.co.uk’:

‘I am still a Derby player and have 12 months left on my contract. I will probably be looking at something else, though.”

‘On the back of last season, I have heard there are quite a few clubs looking at me. I’m more than willing to speak to anyone. I need to get my future sorted. The Premier League would be my preference, although I would also go to a Championship side with ambitions.”

"I am a football fan and know a bit about what is happening at Portsmouth – it sounds like exciting times. I know a little bit about Steve Cotterill, too. Some of my friends have worked with him and I am sure he would be a great manager to play under and would be something I would enjoy thoroughly.”

‘That would be something I would be excited about getting involved in. I have also seen how he works when I have played for teams against him. He is quite instrumental in everything, motivational with plenty of passion. They are the sort of managers I would like to work under. I would definitely like to work under him at some point in my career.”

"There is a problem with Derby over a payment to Charlton. That needs to be sorted out before I can move on. It’s a bit of a waiting game, really. If anything can get done before pre-season training then I will be happy to do that.”

“I would like to get my future sorted and hopefully to do pre-season and get to know my new team-mates, wherever that may be. At the moment, though, I am at Derby so I’ve just got to wait to see what happens.”

Derby froze Varney’s career when an additional sum would be due to Charlton should he play one more game for the Rams.

Overall Holloway’s decision could be of great benefit to Nigel Clough, as hopefully, an extra £half-million will swell his war chest for the coming season and either increase the quality or number of signings he can attract to Pride Park for the 11/12 season.
