What I.Saw: A Manager Pushed, Objects Thrown & Chants Of "We Want 6".
Sunday, 15th Sep 2013 16:36 by I.Saw

Millwall, a pitch invasion, a manager assaulted, objects thrown at players, a "Den Of Hatred"; "Read All About It, Read All About It".

And whilst newspapers inevitably will play up the trouble and fans will be quoted calling for expulsion of the club, fences, closed doors matches, points deductions and just about every conceivable penalty other than the death sentence, the truth is Millwall like most clubs have a bunch of nutters.

The difference I believe, is that they could police them better.

Being at the ground watching cups, plastic bottles and other items flying toward the pitch you know it's wrong, the baiting of players wrong also, you, as a fan want justice. Instant Justice. The police wading in and ejecting the idiots for example.

When that doesn't happen it winds you up, even more so when a bloke pushes the manager (lucky it wasn't Billy Davies or we'd still be hearing about it now) and ambles across the pitch virtually unimpeded with only one solitary steward trying to detain him.

Adding insult to injury the bloke pulls up his hoddie and disappears into the bowels of the stand. It's wrong. Where were the police and why wasn't the club employing more of them and less stewards?

We all know the answer don't we. Money talks.

And so does football, on the pitch the Rams brushed aside the Lions in a comprehensive display.

Craig Bryson scored a hat-trick of spectacular goals. Two long range then a composed third after an excellent defence splitting pass by Kieron Freeman on as a late substitute after Adam Smith was hit by a missile.

Bryson deservedly was man of the match and would have been even had he not scored three goals, the first hat-trick in the League since Paul Simpson back in the 1996 era.

I was actually beginning to think I might never see another one in my lifetime! Hopefully now the floodgates have opened we might see a few more before the end of the year.

But it wasn't just the Bryson Show, the whole team played well, worked hard and overran the home side.

It was doubly pleasing not to sit on a two goal lead and try to hold out, rather the Rams pushed on, helped by a red card for a high foot on Will Hughes.

Whether ref Keith Stroud got that right or not it was a poor performance by the Stroud official, bookings for taking a free kick too quickly, for kicking the ball into the stand after the Lions solitary goal, yet allowing Nicky Bailey to kick out at Smith after the ball had gone went unpunished.

The only positive thing to say about the ref was that after the troubles with the home fans he showed no further yellows.

As it was, the final five to one score line, with additions from Jake Buxton and youngster Mason Bennett, proved somewhat of an understatement. For the second time this season the chant of "We Want Six" echoed from the Derby faithful.

Echoing back to the bad old days the away fans were told to stay in their seats after the final whistle. Advice I ignored and slipped out of a side door as a steward held the gate open and then a similar move with the police at the train station.

I mingled with the Millwall fans at South Bermondsey station, they were quiet, subdued with not a foul word to be found. Better behaved than most teams after match crowds in all honesty.

And there's the rub, the vast majority of Millwall fans are a credit to their club, it's the idiots though that make the headlines and stereotypically it's easy to jump on the bandwagon.

As I write this It's Sunday morning and I'm asked for a quote. "Did I feel threatened"?

No, I respond, not at all, at the 'Old Den' I felt threatened, at the play-off semi final I felt scared but yesterday was a walk in the park. A walk in the park Millwall style perhaps... but nothing to write home about.

Now what was the question?
