G.M's MatchDay Preview: Rams Must Move On And Tame Lions
Saturday, 8th Mar 2014 06:25 by George Martin

Derby will need to ensure they put the disappointment of the Burnley defeat behind them before they welcome Millwall to the iPro this afternoon.

Against Burnley crucial decisions did not go their way and on another day it could have been 1-1 at half time. Very early on it seemed that the referee wanted to please both the home crowd and the Burnley players and he definitely did a very good job of doing that!

Derby's performance going forward against Burnley in the first half was a little disappointing but the attitude and style of play totally changed in the second half and Derby were very unfortunate not to be equalise. After around three deflections from a corner the killer second goal came and the game was over.

With Martin suspended for today’s match, it is likely Sammon will lead the line, although after a good substitute appearance, Bamford will also be in contention. I have actually wondered this week if we would possibly change formation to a 4-4-2.

I expect Russell to continue on the wing and Bryson to come in for Hendrick. Dawkins was a little disappointing against Burnley and will hope to retain his place. With Ward being fit and Bamford looking sharp we have ample options available both to start the game and substitutions during the game.

Millwall have been in and around the relegation zone for a number of months. Ian Holloway has come in and taken over but has not had an immediate positive impact on results. DJ Campbell should play some part after a bout of flu and is always a danger.

If Derby has any hope of automatic promotion and putting pressure on Burnley this is a game they should and must win. Millwall will pack the midfield, get men behind the ball and make it difficult for us to break them down.

Players and fans will need to be patient but I fully expect a Derby win.

Current Form — Last 5 League Matches:

Derby (3rd): D, W, W, W, L

Millwall (21st): L, D, D, L, L

The Stats That Matter:

The Rams were proving to be quick starters this season with 25 of their goal tally coming in the first 45 minutes of matches up until their last 11 matches during which time they have only managed 1.

Steve McClaren has collected 49 points of a possible 63 points as Rams Head Coach and his team has only lost 1 match in their last 8 hit outs.

The Rams have the highest goals ‘for’ in the Championship with 60 while Millwall has conceded 61 which is the most ‘against’.

Derby are unbeaten in their last five matches at the iPro while The Lions have not won in Derby since 2004 and only once in their last 6 meetings overall.

Last time The Rams steam rolled The Lions when they won 5-1 last September.

Millwall has only won one of their last 15 matches which was back in December but you have to go way back to September for their last away win.
