RamZone Wrap: Ivan The Terrific Fires Derby Into 3rd Round
Wednesday, 27th Aug 2014 02:55 by Daniel J Sewart

The Rams displayed the depth that Steve McClaren is building in his squad with 6 changes to the team that romped home on Saturday against Fulham.

Christie, Bryson, Martin, Ward, Buxton and Eustace were out while Shotton, Whitbread, Mascarell, Dawkins, Hughes and Best were in.

Both teams traded blows in the opening 30 minutes with Derby slightly shading possession and chances but in a matter of a minute they could have scored twice.

Charlton Keeper Nick Pope did well to save a shot from Leon Best and only moments later Jeff Hendrick didn’t quite get hold of his shot when opportunity beckoned.

Derby looked the most likely to score late in the first and early in the second but the killer ball or touch was eluding them while The Addicks defence were doing a good job of mopping up forays forward.

In the end the difference came down to a great run by Chris Martin who had been subbed on to try and break the deadlock. The class of The Rams number 9 showed when he topped off his impressive break by setting up Ivan Calero, whose strike from 12 yards cannoned into the top corner on 87 minutes.

The 19 year old Spaniard on his Rams debut, showed composure and a quality finish which will only add to the growing excitement surrounding this young man, who could prove to be something very special.

Charlton tried to level things up in the dying minutes but it was to no avail as they fell out of the League Cup competition and Derby headed victorious into the 3rd round.

Ryan Weston was at the iPro for the cup tie and once he is able to balance his dual roles as a working man and well respected but unpaid fan site reporter — we will present his full and comprehensive report on The Rams continuing Cup run.

We Said / They Said - Match Reaction:

We Said — Steve McClaren:

"These under-21 boys have been doing well. We talk about recruitment being important for the first team but it's very important that we get an under-21 development team of quality as well because we are playing top teams.”

“Our under-21 squad is very good and they deserved a chance. With 20 minutes to go I thought 'let's open this game up' because no one wanted extra time and it was a fitting end for us and I'm delighted Ivan stepped up for us."

They said — Bob Peeters:

"I'm disappointed with the way we have been beaten, if they rip us apart you can give them a round of applause but I'm unhappy with the way we lost. But Derby are a very good side and I wish them all the luck now in the Capital One Cup.”

"I'm very proud of what my team showed and I give compliments to my players because they proved they are working very hard and know what we want."
