What I.Saw: Quite Frankly - We've Not Played Worse All Season!
Sunday, 1st Mar 2015 12:52 by I.Saw

“Let the train take the strain". Engineering works on the main East Coast line so its "Hop on a bus" before the train again takes over, what's an extra hour between friends?

Between friends it was a good day out, beers and Fulham's famous food courtesy of the Putney Pie Company.

First class fans. Derby sang till the end despite losing two nil, reminiscent of our worst team in history days. The stand rocked as we bounced.

Third class players. We were awful. Sixty eight minutes our first shot on target. It was tame. As was another some five minutes later.

And that was the sum of it. The Cottagers easily deserved to win, Ross McCormack was outstanding, or rather we let him be.

What else? Well we were treated to the sight of Jonny Russell coming on for Jesse Lingard at half time and then when Darren Bent who was having an unhappy Saturday limped off, Russell went to play as our one up front.

That was until the closing minutes when he was joined by Ryan Shotton, I kid you not. All that was missing was the jumpers for goalposts and we could be back in our schoolyards. It was that amateurism.

Quite frankly we've not played worse all season.

Now for the overly optimistic ratings bit — Players I.Saw:

Grant 5 - Couldn't fault him for either goal.

Christie 4 - Withdrawn at half time and rightly so.

Shotton 4 - Switched from centre half to full back to centre forward, excelled at none of those rolls.

Keogh 5 - A pebble at the back, the one that gets washed up and down the beach at the mercy of the tide.

Forsyth 3 - Saw him once. I think that's right. I'm sure it is. I think.

Hughes 5 - Didn't impose himself on anything yesterday.

Mascarell 4 - Lightweight and ineffective, the nicest things I could say.

Hendrick 4 - I got flamed the other week for saying that Jeff "Ran around a bit". Guess what. He ran around a bit again without really making much of a difference to anything.

Lingard 4 - Never in the game.

Ince 3 - The law of diminishing returns continues to strike, from being a revelation when he joined Ince is now down to being the last name on the team sheet.

Bent 3 - Anonymous in the extreme.

Subs

Buxton 5 - On for Christie at half time. For those statto's amongst us - we didn't concede whilst Jake was on the pitch.

Russell 5 - Given forty five in place of Lingard, looked busy but then looks can be deceiving can't they.

Bryson 4 - Replaced Bent.

We Said / They Said - Match Reaction:

We Said — Steve McClaren:

"It's a long season and we have been playing at a high level for the majority of it, that is why we are where we are. But we came up against a Fulham team who looked at their league position and knew they needed a result. What were they, fifth from bottom, with the quality they have?"

"They are a Premier League side - just come down - with Premier League players. They defended for their lives and credit to them. They deserved to win and we would not have scored if played until Tuesday.”

"We'll have one or two more bad days at the office, I can guarantee that, but the key thing is we just shake it off and go again. We've missed an opportunity, but there will be others and we have to make sure we take them."

They said — Kit Symons:

"It's always nice to get a win, especially against the team at the top of the table, and the manner in which we got it. It's only three points but it's a big three points given who it was against and how we did it.”

"We scored two goals, we could have scored more and we kept a clean sheet, so it's very pleasing."
