Morley's Match Musings: Rams Are Answering Questions Of Character
Monday, 25th Apr 2016 12:15 by Nathan Morley

With the Rams having already secured a play-off place on Tuesday night, Saturday was the first of their 3 remaining league games to build strength, fitness, confidence and maybe even stake a claim for a 4th place before the play-offs.

It certainly didn’t feel like a friendly from a Derby perspective as the Rams clearly looked up for it. Wassall picked his best available eleven, which even included Hughes due to Thorne missing out through illness.

Hughes played the sitting ‘Thorne’ role in the midfield 3 to good effect and looked sharp and you wouldn’t realise it was his first start since the first game of the season. He was strong and knocked the ball about but it isn’t his natural position and is definitely better utilised further forward.

The fact is that the 75 minute run will have done Hughes a lot of good. Perhaps we’ll see a midfield of Thorne — Hughes - Bryson at Brighton?

The whole game was a good match up between clearly two good sides. Sheffield Wednesday came to play the ball and was an organised side. Both sides held firm in defence during what was an open game that could’ve easily gone either way. Ultimately a draw was a fair result.

In terms of chances, Derby really should have scored more than the 1 goal which was a bit of a concern. The chances were created and it was just frustrating to have only managed a draw at the final whistle.

Luckily for Rams fans Darren Bent came out from the cold to save the day after great work and an excellent cross from Russell (super energy, what great form he’s in by the way) that created the chance and an expert header from Bent finished it off. Perhaps there will be more to come from Bent over the next few weeks? He has to be an option in tight games, particularly when Derby is creating so much like yesterday and require a proven finisher.

Just like they did on Tuesday night, Derby had to come from behind to get a result. The character of the squad has been questionable at times this season but it seems it’s there now, whether it be the resilience to hold on to a hard-fought 1-0 like at Charlton or to make a comeback like on Tuesday.

Next up is Brighton away on Bank Holiday Monday. It’s important to keep this unbeaten run up going into the play-offs and to prove not just to us but to themselves that the Rams have what it takes in the play-offs, by getting a positive result at the Amex.

COYR!!
