Leeds to nick Sheffield United target?
Thu 29th Jul 2010 04:09 by Marko

Looks like that somewhat crude "Kasper Schmichael song" will get another airing in honour of another new signing!

Leeds United are believed to have made an 11th hour move for Ipswich centre-half Alex Bruce, after his move to Sheffield United stalled.

It is being widely reported this morning that the 25-year-old will join the whites' in a deal worth up to £300,000 after the Blunts failed to agree a fee with Ipswich.

If you have not already made the link, Bruce is the son of a certain Steve Bruce! During our recent friendly defeat at Bury, the United faithful welcomed Kasper Schmichael to our club by singing "Your Dad's a **** but we like you!". I wonder if the same "honour" will be bestowed on Bruce junior? if the deal does go through of course!

Like Kasper, Bruce has had something of a nomadic experience in his short career which began at Blackburn Rovers. He failed to make the first-team at Ewood Park and was farmed out to Oldham on loan before joining Birmingham permanently in 2005/06. He made six appearances for the Bluenoses but during 2005 had loan spells with Tranmere, Oldham (again) and Sheffield Wednesday. He joined Ipswich on a free in 2006 admist accusations of "nepotism" - his old man was the Birmingham boss at the time.

At Ipswich, he has made 115 starts and by all accounts was a popular player, becoming captain at one-stage. However last February he joined Town's Championship rivals Leicester but only made four appearances as the Foxes made the play-offs.

Capped twice by Eire (his Grandmother is Irish), if the rumours are true then he will be linking up with his old Portman Road team-mate Richard Naylor.
