Warnock to make changes against the Posh
Warnock to make changes against the Posh

Leeds are anxious to avoid yet another home defeat against Peterborough United tomorrow, but Neil Warnock will still be taking the opportunity to have a look at a couple of the fringe players.

Monday's defeat against Derby was our 10th home defeat of the season, the worst home record in over 60 years, so with two home games still to play we urgently need to avoid adding to that sorry statistic when we Peterborough and Leicester come to Elland Road.

Tom Lees admitted that it hasn’t been good enough when he spoke to the official site. "There's been a lot of disappointment and frustration, and pride has been dented I think. It's up to us as individuals to get that pride back. These last few games aren't worthless because you're playing for your Leeds career."

But Neil Warnock wants to give one or two players the chance to impress as he makes his plans for next season. “Peterborough’s the one game of the four we’ve got left where the other club aren’t going for promotion. I’ve got to be careful against the other sides with the teams I put out but there’ll be two or three changes tomorrow. I can’t still be wondering about these players in two weeks’ time.”

I can see what he means about our other remaining opponents, although it’s stretching a point to say that Leicester are still promotion contenders. Warnock has suggested that Nunez is likely to get a game, while a couple of other changes will be enforced. Zac Thompson and Michael Brown are suspended are being sent off in the last two games, but Adam Clayton will be available after serving his own two match ban.

The Posh are nine points clear of the relegation zone and seem to have guaranteed themselves a second season at this level. This is a marked improvement on their last season at this level, in 2009/10 when they went straight back down to League One and Darren Ferguson’s first spell at the club ended when he was sacked before Christmas. But they came back up at the first attempt after the chairman made up with Fergie junior and persuaded him to return to London Road.

The Peterborough boss is now looking for better than mere survival at this level, as he told the Peterborough Evening Telegraph: “We have to ensure we continue to progress as a football club. If, for example, we were to finish 18th this season then doing that again next season won’t be good enough.” They have one new injury problem for tomorrow as striker Emile Sinclair has a twisted ankle, but Captain Grant McCann is expected to recover from an ankle injury and Tyrone Barnett could return after missing two games with a hamstring problem.

We did of course beat them 3-2 in the away game in October thanks to O’Dea’s winner six minutes into injury time, when we enjoyed the hilarious sight of a member of the Ferguson family moaning about the amount of time added at the end! Can we make it a double tomorrow? Oh go on, I’ll tempt fate by putting us down for an all too rare victory on home soil.
