2012 Review Part 3

A six goal thriller at home to Blackburn in September is marred by a nasty injury to Ross McCormack. Jermaine Jenas is also linked with a shock loan move from Tottenham.

The Jenas link proves to be a dud but Leeds do sign a Premiership midfielder, albeit yet another old Neil Warnock charge in Stoke's Michael Tonge who has spent much of his four years at the Britannia out on loan.

Leeds lose at Cardiff but events off the field dominate, it is reported that the proposed takeover by GFH Capital is on the verge of collapse and the bidders are close to walking away. Ken Bates rubbishes the claims but another demonstration against his ownership is staged mainly in the South Stand during the 3-2 home defeat against Hull City our first home defeat of the season.

Dominic Poleon becomes a hero as Leeds sink Forest 2-1 attaining revenge for that 7-3 drubbing in March, the youngster popping up with the winner. Bates meanwhile blames lawyers for the takeover delay. He also turns on the Leeds United Supporters Trust branding them "idiots" and "a pain in the arse".

Leeds win a dramatic Capital One Third Round tie against a strong Everton side before drawing 2-2 at Bolton.

OCTOBER

El Hadji Diouf's agent warns the whites' they will need to offer his client a better contract to keep him beyond January. The Senegalese star is mobbed by adoring fans as Leeds beat Barnsley 1-0 at Elland Rd.

Another loanee arrives, winger Ryan Hall formerly under Warnock and latterly of Southend. Warnock is furious with the Jamaican FA who call up Rodolph Austin for duty with an injured ankle and fly him back economy class just hours before Leeds face Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Despite a stunning equaliser from Michael Tonge, the 1-1 draw at Hillsborough is marred by a Leeds "fan" who runs onto the pitch and pushes Chris Kirkland over. A 21-year-old called Aaron Cawley is later arrested and jailed for the attack, tensions boil over as Owl's chief Dave Jones brands Leeds fans "vile animals" and criticises the Leeds players for applauding the 5000 travelling fans at the final whistle.

The month ends on a disappointing note league wise with a 1-0 loss at home to Birmingham, however Leeds bounce back in the League Cup fourth round dumping Premiership Southampton out of the competition 3-0, the reward being a mouthwatering home tie with European Champions Chelsea in the quarter finals.

NOVEMBER

Leeds draw at Brighton 2-2 but lose 1-0 at Burnley. However worse was yet to come as Watford romp to a 6-1 win at Elland Road over nine man Leeds. Jason Pearce sent off and Rodolph Austin stretchered off with what immediately looked like a broken leg.

The miserable run continued at cauldron of hate Millwall, Leeds having Luke Varney dismissed and falling to a late Chris Wood goal.

An announcement on Wednesday 21st November gives Leeds fans the news they had waited nearly six months for, Leeds will be taken over by GFH Capital but not formally until December 21st and Ken Bates will remain as chairman until the end of the season before becoming club president.

The announcement appears to give Leeds renewed vigour, two new loan signings Swansea defender Alan Tate and West Brom winger Jerome Thomas arrive on loan inspiring Leeds to successive wins over high flyers Crystal Palace and Leicester.

DECEMBER

The month begins with a deserved win over Huddersfield, Leeds winning 4-2 over former boss Simon Grayson's side. However the mini-revival is halted with a disappointing 3-1 defeat at Derby.

Leeds beat Ipswich 2-0 to get the promotion charge back on track but all eyes were on the visit of Chelsea on the 19th in the League Cup. Despite taking a half time 1-0 lead against the European Champions who looked jaded having flown back from Tokyo as World Club Championship runners up, Rafa Benitez's men click into gear and crush the whites 5-1.

Leeds bounce back with a hard fought 2-1 win over Middlesbrough but the Christmas period is a miserable one as Leeds are well beaten at Notts Forest and Hull.

So 2012 drew to a close, arguably it was a year dominated by takeover talk and the six month drawn out saga overshadowed anything that happened on the pitch.

Hopefully 2013 will see a more coordinated year on and off the pitch.
