Haigh quits after row with Cellino
Haigh quits after row with Cellino
Friday, 11th Apr 2014 21:43 by Tim Whelan

In the latest episode of the soap opera that Leeds United have become, David Haigh has resigned from his position at the club and Spy cameras have been found in the boardroom and the toilets.

David Haigh was supposed to be the managing director of Leeds United under the new regime, but it’s no surprise that his departure has come so soon after Cellino has taken over. The Italian has been very critical of Haigh in recent weeks, not least during the late night interview he inadvertently gave to the “White Leeds” internet radio station.

Haigh has also been the target of the anger of a lot of fans who have become disgruntled at the way GFH had been running the club, and he was said to have left the stadium abruptly when he was the subject of abusive chanting at the end of the Charlton game last week. Then came the annual accounts which revealed that Leeds lost £9.5m in the 12 months to June last year, and that was before the huge increase in the wage bill during the current season.

Nevertheless, Haigh sounded hurt today as he resigned, saying that his position has been made untenable by the new owners. “Owing to various statements made by and on behalf of the new majority owners of Leeds United FC, I am left with no alternative than to resign as Managing Director of the club.”

“This is a matter of particular regret to me since I was the person who first introduced Eleonora Sport to the club's owners. I also gave them my full and constant support in the Football League's lengthy approval process.”

Haigh also claimed to have had to put his own money into the club on several occasions to meet urgent bills. And “In addition to all this I had to deal with and manage what can only be described as the crazy situation of very limited support from those who should have supported the club and the management, whilst at the same time having little or no decision-making ability.”

“I have arranged for Sport Capital [the Yorkshire based consortium he worked with before Christmas] to convert some of the loans made to the club into shares and once complete, those shares will be given to the fans, so it truly will be the fans' club. Leeds is a fantastic club in a fantastic city and I wish Eleonora Sports, Brian McDermott, the players, staff and fans all the very best for the future."

And another strange story to emerge today is that Cellino has asked the police to investigate after finding that club funds have been used to buy spy cameras for the boardroom and the toilets. I can understand why someone would want to spy on board meetings to find out what is going on, but it’s a bit pervy to put cameras in the toilets.

Where will it all end?
