Best of British as Massimo turns to Clarke?
Friday, 29th Aug 2014 23:41

Leeds are reportedly in-talks with Steve Clarke over the vacant managerial post at Elland Road.

When the early front-runners seemed to be Italian, with the likes of Rolando Maran, Benito Carbone and Gianluca Festa touted as David Hockaday's replacement, Cellino''s apparent "love" of British coaches late on Friday evening Steve Clarke's name was being bandied about the internet.

Clarke of course was manager at West Brom up until just before last Christmas and although his reign at the Baggies will polarise opinion, Clarke does have an impressive cv as an assistant and coach at a host of top clubs such as Chelsea, Newcastle, Liverpool and West Ham.

On paper, he looks tailored made for what is needed at Leeds eg a tracksuited coach rather than a suited manager but the question is would someone as long-in-the-tooth as Clarke be willing to work under the bizarre arrangement at Elland Road where Cellino and Sporting Director Nicola Salerno appear to have constructed the squad.

And if Leeds legend Johnny Giles is to be believed, Cellino should go the whole hog and manage the Leeds team! Giles who like Clarke managed West Brom accused Cellino of being a "headbanger" and accused him of paying Hockaday "buttons" to merely train the team.

Like any of the British names being bandied about, it is hard to see the likes of Clarke, Glenn Hoddle or Chris Hughton happy to assume the role of a "yes" man at Elland Road.

Despite Leeds being managerless, the signings are set to continue with Adryan the crack Brazilian midfielder set to be unveiled alongside one-time West Ham loanee striker Brian Montenegro set to be unveiled as our 13th and 14th new signings since the summer transfer window reopened,
