Why not just give it to Redders?
Why not just give it to Redders?

With Oscar Garcia moving to Watford and Steve Clarke seemingly no nearer to joining the club, the temptation to appoint Neal Redfearn as head-coach has never been more tempting?

As one pundit said at the weekend, Redfearn knows the club inside out and took the decision to recall youngsters Alex Mowatt and start Lewis Cook against Bolton last Saturday - Leeds triumphing 1-0. Post-match he seemed appreciative of the policy Massimo Cellino has implementing by signing young footballers mainly from Serie B and blending them with home-grown talent.

Although Redfearn admitted he loved his job at the academy, notably he has not ruled himself out of taking over from Dave Hockaday in the long-term.

As United's options narrow, could Leeds do worse than turn to Redders who has taken on the role as caretaker boss on three occasions now? Oscar Garcia rumoured to be a top-target has gone to Watford who this week parted company with Beppe Salleno, an Italian coach inevitably linked with us due to our present ownership.

Scot Steve Clarke was a popular choice, but he doesn't seem to have moved any closer to the hot-seat despite having talks with Leeds last weekend. Other names such as former boss Simon Grayson now at Preston and Mark Cooper, son of Leeds legend Terry Cooper, now at Swindon have ruled themselves out.

So maybe Redders is our man by default? The only problem I can see that if he was to fall foul of the notoriously impatient Cellino then it is likely he will sever all ties with the club despite having done some wonderful work at the academy down the years.

Redfearn has always struck me as being too quiet a man to take the top job, which may be why he doesn’t want the pressure of being a manager, but maybe the limited ‘head coach’ role would suit him better.
