Give me just a little more time
Sunday, 28th Sep 2014 22:40 by Tim Whelan

As Leeds came crashing back to earth after the euphoria of the recent good run under Neil Redfearn, new boss Darko Milanic pleaded that "I need time" to get this Leeds team playing in the way he wants.

The Slovenian had taken just three training sessions with his new side before the 2-0 defeat at Griffin Park, in and told the Yorkshire Post "It was a very difficult game. I expected a game like this against a side with very aggressive forwards.” And although it was an impressive performance from the home side, Milanic admitted that it just wasn’t good enough from Leeds.

"We were not good enough in possession in the first half and were not dangerous. We have to play with a much more offensive mentality. In the second half we did it better and had some good shots, but we weren't good enough to score and Brentford were very dangerous on the counter-attack." And although he has come to Leeds with something of a reputation for negative football, he promised that we will play with a more adventurous style in future.

"I want to play offensive and we played with two strikers today but it's not enough if you don't have offensive thoughts. That first game at Elland Road will be very important for us. With support and energy we can make it. But I have to know individual players in the division better and I need time." And while he’s at it, let’s hope he can get the defence sorted out, after a chaotic performance when the Brentford forwards were seemingly able to cut through the Leeds back line at will.

Yesterday’s performance and result will give more ammunition to those who think that Neil Redfearn should have got the job on a permanent basis. It was a surprise that Redders wasn’t in the dougout yesterday after Milanic’s promise to keep him involved with first team affairs, and now there are suggestions that his former club Barnsley are interested in taking him as their next manager.

We’ll have to hope that Milanic has got what it takes to get the team playing the way he wants, but his two media appearances haven’t filled me with confidence. He doesn’t sound inspirational, and has given a couple of mumbling performances showing that his command of English isn’t all it could be, though perhaps that will improve when he’s been in the country for a bit longer.

Maybe he will get the team a bit more organised once he’s had time to evaluate the squad he’s inherited, but time is the one thing a head coach never has when they’re working for Massimo Cellino.
