Cani arrives as Tonge goes and Austin stays
Monday, 2nd Feb 2015 17:30 by Tim Whelan

The news so far on deadline day is that Edgar Cani has arrived on loan, Michael Tonge is off to Millwall, but Rudy Austin won’t be joining Wigan Athletic

6 foot 4 inch Albanian international striker Edgar Cani has signed on loan from Catania for the rest of the season, subject to international clearance. The 25-year-old has played 14 times in Serie B this season, scoring a slightly less than prolific three goals, but he certainly seemed eager to impress when he spoke to the official site.

"I think it is a great team. I think that we can keep going like this, like these last two matches that we won. I would like to play and do as much for the team as I can. I know that it is a great league, I’ve seen some games and I like the fans and the atmosphere a lot." And given his height it’s no surprise that he added "I’m a good header and I like to move in the forward areas.”

We have to admire his enthusiasm, but given that he couldn’t hold down a regular place in a Serie B side, you have to wonder if he’ll be good enough for the championship. His extra height will give us an option in attack we didn’t have before today, but if that’s what we wanted we might have been better off keeping hold of Matt Smith.

Meanwhile, the club has officially denied that we will be selling Rudy Austin to Wigan, and according to the official site he has expressed a desire to remain at the club. It seems that Sky read on twitter that Rudy would be joining Wigan and reported this as news, not realising that the feed they were looking at was unofficial. Whilst Rudy is currently back in favour for team selection, his contract runs out in the summer and so far there have been no moves to extend it.

One player who will be departing is Michael Tonge, who has joined Millwall on loan for the remainder of the season. He was a regular in the side during his first season after being signed by Neil Warnock, when he made 39 appearances in 2012/13, but has been in and out of the side since then. This move effectively brings his Leeds career to an end, as his contract expires in the summer.
