Stadium Expansion Starts In January?

Swans Chairman Huw Jenkins has hinted that work could start on expanding the stadium in January next year although he did add in that it would only happen if 'all goes to plan'

The club have been talking about expanding the stadium ever since we secured a second season in the Premier League and whilst we now head into a fifth campaign there has been much criticism for the fact that we have not done it already.

With every game currently a home sell out you can see the logic in wanting it done so we can use this current spell we are enjoying as the chance to grab a lifetime's worth of Swansea fans.

The Liberty Stadium currently holds around 20,800 people and the plans are to expand initially to around 27,000 although the club seem determined to push through the plans to own the stadium first before the expansion work starts.

"It might seem strange, but it sits comfortably with us that everything has to be right before we go ahead with the expansion" said the Swans Chairman

"As a club we will try our best to progress on the pitch first and foremost, then the other things will fall into place when they can

"There are many cases of clubs expanding their stadium and doing all the things that come with that, but neglecting what goes out on the field.

"We have to make sure we don't make that mistake, we can only start when we are ready"

Swansea Council have been reported as wanting to sell the stadium and the club are taking this opportunity to push through a deal to secure their asset which they moved into 10 years ago this summer.

"Buying the stadium before any expansion is not the only way forward, but I think we have got so far with the council in terms of looking at the stadium ownership that it's a natural thing to see if we can bottom that out first, then we will see where we go from there." added Jenkins
