Match Report - Leeds United 0-1 Huddersfield Town - Lacklustre Leeds Fall to Defeat
Saturday, 10th Sep 2016 20:47 by Lucas Monk

Leeds United fell to a bitterly disappointing 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Huddersfield Town, who extended their lead at the top of the Championship table to four points thanks to a scorcher from Australian international Aaron Mooy.

Leeds United's agonizing wait for a first home win of the 2015-16 Sky Bet Championship season continues after the Whites suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of local opponents Huddersfield Town. Although the Terriers only needed the one goal to walk away with all three points, there was much disparity between the quality of the two side's performances. Aaron Mooy's 55th-minute screamer means that Garry Monk has now won just one of his opening six Championship matches as Leeds manager.

The result sees Huddersfield extend their lead at the top of the table to four points, with David Wagner's unbeaten side leading the Championship pack having accumulated an impressive 16 points thus far. Leeds meanwhile fall into the relegation zone and into 22nd place, with Rotherham United overtaking the Whites despite throwing away a 2-1 lead at home to Bristol City to draw 2-2 late on.

First Half

It was the visitors Huddersfield who got proceedings underway, shooting toward the Kop in front of 28,514 fans inside Elland Road.

Despite the visitors kicking the game off, Leeds applied much of the early pressure. With five minutes gone successive Whites crosses were hacked clear before Huddersfield were penalized for an offside at the opposite end of the field.

The opening 15 minutes were rather dull, but just two minutes after the game had reached the 15-minute mark, there was some attacking action to note. Huddersfield's Schindler made a crucial intervention to prevent Chris Wood from seizing upon a Kalvin Phillips through ball, before the home side won a free-kick on halfway.

Eight minutes later, and United's Kyle Bartley was called into defensive action to head a left-wing van La Parra cross away and clear to safety. The home side would then move forward themselves two minutes later, but a long-range effort from an off-balance Alex Mowatt that soared well over Ward's bar served only to invite derisory jeers from the away fans.

Two minutes after Mowatt's ugly mess of an effort, Huddersfield would have a charge at the Leeds goal with Aaron Mooy drilling a low effort wide from 25 yards out, after Rajiv van La Parra saw his shot blocked.

On 33 minutes there was a stoppage in play as United duo Kyle Bartley and Rob Green received treatment following a collision in the penalty area. Two minutes passed before the pair got to their feet to continue.

Just minutes after receiving treatment, Green was forced into a fine block to deny on-loan Ingolstadt striker Elias Kachunga from close range on 37 minutes, but the German had already been flagged offside anyway.

A minute later, and Leeds would have the half's best chance from a corner. An unmarked Chris Wood heading wide at the near post following Alex Mowatt's delivery into the area with 38 minutes played.

The game's first controversy came within the dying embers of the first period. Leeds' Marcus Antonsson had a penalty shout waved away by the referee on the stroke of half-time, despite many within the ground claiming that it was in fact a penalty.

The final action of note in the first-half was the booking of Aaron Mooy after the Australian hacked down United skipper Liam Bridcutt just moments before the whistle.

HT - Leeds United 0-0 Huddersfield

An extremely gritty half where chances were at a premium. Leeds had the best opportunity when an unmarked Wood headed wide from close range, but in truth the half was drab and the sides deservedly went in level.

Second Half

Leeds kicked off the second period with both Garry Monk and David Wagner opting against making any substitutions during the interval.

In contrast to the first half's slow start, it took just 10 second half minutes for the deadlock to be broken. Aaron Mooy sending the away support into raptures with a rasping 20-yard strike that left Green in the goal with no chance whatsoever. 0-1.

It would take until the 69th minute for Leeds to create any sort of opening. Substitute Souleymane Doukara's deflected cross found its way to Alex Mowatt, who was denied on the turn by Ward at the near post.

On 83 minutes there was a stoppage in play as Liam Bridcutt received treatment after being on the receiving end of a poor challenge from Kasey Palmer. Played resumed a minute later, and an Aaron Mooy delivery from a free-kick was headed away by a much-maligned Chris Wood.

With 85 minutes played Huddersfield's Kasey Palmer went in search of a second goal for his side. The Chelsea loanee jinked past Kalvin Phillips and Liam Bridcutt before firing a 25-yard strike just over Rob Green's crossbar. Leeds would then have an opportunity to level the scoring a minute later, Alex Mowatt's lofted ball finding Chris Wood who could only head a tame effort straight at Ward in the Huddersfield net.

Huddersfield nearly killed the game off in style on 88 minutes when a loose ball fell to van La Parra who opted to hit a first-time effort toward the Leeds goal from 35 yards out. The attempted lob almost caught Rob Green out but the former England stopper managed to get a deft touch onto the ball to tip the effort over and keep any faint hopes of a United comeback alive.

Eight minutes of added time were announced two minutes later but Leeds were wasteful with this time, committing needless fouls and resorting to aimless punts upfield to try and pull level. In the end the visitors saw out added time with ease and they were probably good value for their victory on the whole.

FT - Leeds United 0-1 Huddersfield Town - Mooy 55'

A game that was close in terms of the scoreline but far from close with regards to the respective performances of both teams. Leeds, lined up in a distinctly primitive 4-4-2, looked disjointed, whereas David Wagner's choice of a structured 4-2-3-1 allowed a coherent and battling Huddersfield outfit to swamp the midfield and ultimately win the game.

Leeds were erratic with the ball and hesitant to get stuck into their opponents off it, and a sheer lack of passion, cohesion, and invention cost them dearly. Huddersfield competed well, and their energy and desire was a major contributing factor to their deserved victory.

Leeds will now look to Tuesday's basement battle against Blackburn Rovers at Elland Road in an attempt to pick up a first home win of the season, whilst Wagner's Huddersfield will make a difficult trip away to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Man of The Match

MOTM - Aaron Mooy (Huddersfield)

25-year-old Manchester City loanee Mooy was the undisputed man of the match. The Sydney-born midfielder ran the show in the middle of the park for Huddersfield and a combative performance coupled with a sumptuous goal made the Australian many observers' choice as man of the match in this fixture.

Post-Match Reaction - Garry Monk + David Wagner

Leeds boss Garry Monk was understandably frustrated after a dismal performance and result from his team.

"I'm disappointed with the result, of course" Monk told the BBC. "We went out there with the intention of trying to grab the initiative but partly due to the way (Huddersfield) set up it became a bit of a nothing game.

"We have to get a real reaction now on Tuesday. We need to take the three points, it's as simple as that.

"It's very important that we get this Elland Road monkey off our backs and get the three points."

His Huddersfield counterpart David Wagner was a little happier after another positive result for his team.

"We have deserved every one of the 16 points and we said at the start of the season we would play every single game and give ourselves no limits and at the moment we have great togetherness and a very good working attitude, especially in the defence", the German remarked.

He finished with a confident statement, saying "I think it isn't comfortable for the opponents against us at the moment."
