Albion likely to make new offer for Taylor

The Telegraph are reporting that West Bromwich Albion will make another attempt to sign Charlie Taylor in the next transfer window.

Albion tried to sign Taylor in the summer after our left-back turned down the club’s offer of a new contract, but if we don’t sell him this time we’ll run the risk of losing him for nothing at the end of the season.

The left side of defence has been a problem position for WBA this season, and they currently have right-back Allan Nyom playing there out of position. Their manager Tony Pulis recently had a meeting with new owner Guochuan Lai, and it was agreed that Pulis could start to look for new signings.

The report says that Albion sent a senior member of their recruitment department to the game at Wolves on Saturday, and that they are likely to make an improved bid of around £4 million for Taylor when the transfer window opens in the new year.

So the big question for Leeds is whether we should cash in this time, and take the last opportunity to get some money for Taylor? The player has looked a little out of sorts this season, with his performances failing to match his previous best, possibly due to his mind being elsewhere. When Leeds turned his transfer request down in August it was in the hope that he would help us towards a play-off push, but is it worth it if we’re not getting the best out of him?

If we were to cash in, we would then have to promote 21 year-old Tyler Denton to the first team, which might be a gamble even though he looked quite impressive on his goalscoring debut at Luton in the EFL cup. Unlike Taylor, Denton did sign a new contact this season (until the summer of 2019) and this would give him the chance to develop.

The alternative would be to use part of the fee to sign a more experienced left-back, at least on a loan basis for the rest of the season.

The situation shows how hard it is to compete with the wages on offer in the Premier League now the new TV deal has come into effect, even from some of the lesser clubs. (Apart from WBA, Burnley were also interested in signing Taylor during the summer). Frustrating as it is to for the club to keep selling the best of our academy products, the sad truth is that it likely to keep on happening until we get ourselves back into the Premier League.
