Liverpool rejoice as they draw Leeds in the Quarter-Finals
Thursday, 27th Oct 2016 21:01 by Tim Whelan

Some people in Liverpool are thrilled at the prospect of having to play little old us. Clearly we are not famous any more.

Our reward for beating Norwich in Tuesday night’s memorable game is a trip to Anfield, to face Premier League opposition for the first time in this season’s competition.

As the quarter-final draw was made in the Sky studio, Jamie Carragher was said to have been slapping his thigh with delight when our number came out of the bag immediately after Liverpool’s. Though when he was back on camera he was a little bit more diplomatic, saying that they couldn’t take Leeds lightly but it was better than getting another Premier League team away.

Today, some of the scousers have sounded even more joyful on twitter, with comments like “Let's not underestimate Leeds like we sometime tend to do with smaller teams!”, “It's a good draw and we can play our youngsters again”,” brilliant draw!” and even “5-0 incoming”.

It all seems a far cry from some of our memorable games at Anfield in the past, from the title-deciders between the Revie and Shankly sides in the late 60s/early 70s, to the two Leeds wins I saw at that venue in the 1990s.

But I suppose we shouldn’t be too surprised at the reaction, given that we have now officially taken up the mantle of ‘lowest ranked club left in the competition’. The only other quarter-finalists outside the Premiership are Newcastle, and as you’ve probably noticed, they are top of our division.

Much will depend on the two teams that Monk and Klopp decide to field on the night. Although we’ve managed to get this far with a smattering of reserves and fringe players, if we’re at all serious about trying to win the tie (or even to avoid a hammering) then surely we have to play something close to our full strength team.

Klopp is more likely to rest some key men, but they still have some squad members who can do us serious damage and will be determined to stake their claim for a regular start in the league. And that includes Sturridge, the man with the most irritating goal celebration in world football. So much as I’d love to put one over on the red half of Merseyside after their comments, I fear the chances are that we won’t.

The tie is to be played on Tuesday 29th or Wednesday 30th November, and the official site says that ticket details will be announced “in due course”. As it’s a cup tie there must be a good chance we will get an extra large allocation, though if you can’t get there, the game could well be televised live by Sky.
