Leeds United: Whites to swoop for St Pauli stalwart?
Friday, 23rd Dec 2016 16:55 by Lucas Monk

According to German newspaper BILD, Leeds have made an effort to secure the services of FC St Pauli captain Soren Gonther.

The 30 year-old, whose side currently languish at the foot of the table in Bundesliga 2, has played for the bohemian Hamburg club since signing for the club in 2012 from SC Paderborn 07.

However, Gonther's contract is due to expire at the conclusion of the current season, meaning that come January, he will be officially free to agree a pre-contractual agreement with another club. United are said to be willing to delve into the transfer market next month in an attempt to bolster their defensive ranks, with only Pontus Jansson, Kyle Bartley, and Liam Cooper being the only senior professionals at the club available for selection in central defence.

BILD claim that Leeds have offered a two-year contract to the German, and that should the defender opt to move to Elland Road, he would earn approximately £380,000 per annum. The German newspaper have suggested that it is unlikely that Gonther will leave St Pauli in the upcoming window, but that a January swoop by Garry Monk's side is not absolutely out of the question due to Leeds seeking a deal for the player 'no later than the summer'.

Should a deal be concluded for Gonther, who has made eight starts for his side this term, it is highly probable that he would only serve as an auxiliary option due to the unwavering consistency of Pontus Jansson and Kyle Bartley's performances.
