Wenger blames touchline spat on cultural differences
Monday, 6th Feb 2017 18:22 by Tim Whelan

The Huddersfield Town boss claims that in Germany it’s perfectly acceptable for a manager to run half the length of the field to celebrate.

The Yorkshire Post reported that Wagner said after the game "In British culture it seems to be disrespectful if I celebrate with my players, it is different in Germany to be fair. It isn't something that I usually do, but if there was a moment where this could happen, then it was this moment.”

This is despite the fact that Wenger was warned about his conduct when he did the same thing in a game against Derby earlier this season, which does rather cast doubt on the credibility of his excuse that he didn't know it wasn't the done thing in this country for managers to enter the playing area while the match is still in progress.

It’s fair to say that Gary Monk thought that Wagner’s actions were seriously unprofessional. "They're my values; humility, respect and class, and I don't think he showed that," Monk said. "If someone else goes against those values, then it's wrong. I've been brought up with the values, and that's not come back towards us."

Monk showed his displeasure by intentionally stepping in front of Wagner as the German ran back up the touchline, and Wagner reacted by shoving Monk. Then it all kicked off, with several players from both sides rushing over to get involved. The referee sent both managers to the stands, which I thought was very harsh on Monk, as Wagner was the one who provoked the whole incident, and had been more violent in his actions.

Now the FA have requested video footage of the incident so they can decide whether to take further action against the clubs and/or the individuals involved. One of the players was Pontus Jansson, who picked up his 12th booking of the season as a result. The Swede took to twitter to comment “Really proud to see how we stand up for each other”, which may be a reference to his eagerness to go and have a word with Wenger.

Speaking of a lack of respect and class, the touchline spat rather pales into insignificance compared to the actions of the Huddersfield fan who was ejected for taunting us with a Turkish flag. To be fair to Huddersfield, the club have promised to investigate, and the culprit is likely to face a lengthy ban from the John Smith’s.

So the next time we go back to Huddersfield, there will at least be one provocative dickhead we won’t have to worry about.
