Don’t panic, Leeds have option to extend Monk’s contract
Tuesday, 7th Mar 2017 13:39 by Tim Whelan

According to the Daily Mail, the club don’t think there is any danger of Garry Monk jumping ship, because we have the option of extend his contract by 12 months.

Monk was only given a 12 month contract when he joined us last summer, presumably because Cellino wanted to minimise the compensation payable if he was to run out of patience with the new man after only 6 weeks or so. But the obvious problem with this approach is that it would make it harder to hang onto any coach that did pretty well.

This led to a lot of concern that Monk could easily be poached, with reports that managerless Rangers might be interested, and also some un-named clubs in the Championship. (Though there aren’t many clubs in our division with the potential of Leeds United, and none that are currently without a manager, so it’s hard to see why Monk would be tempted to make a sideways move).

But apparently there is nothing to fear, as the ever-reliable Daily Mail reckon Monk’s current deal allows the club to extend it by a further 12 months, and to offer him a longer contract if he gets us back to the promised land of the Premier League.

So Cellino and Radrizzani are said to be ‘relaxed’ about the situation, though it would help if they resolved the situation once and for all by actually exercising the option to offer Monk a contract extention, as he could still walk away in June as things currently stand, should he think he’s got a better off. Sooner rather than later, chaps.
