An Interview With Simon Hickson-One Half Of Trevor & Simon.
Monday, 14th Apr 2014 14:46

Simon Hickson is well known as one half of British comedy duo "Trevor and Simon". They have appeared on many TV shows including saturday mornings Live and Kicking and Going Live!. Trevor and Simon are now writers and have wrote scripts for shows such as My Parents Are Aliens and Dani's House. Simon is of course also a City fan. He joined us here at Not In My Lifetime to answer a few questions.

So how did being a City fan start for you?

It’s in the family. I was no good at football at school, but my dad was good, being the goalkeeper for a local Salford amateur team. So, following in my dad’s footsteps, I became a City fan. My dad died in 1983… not a great time for City. I wish he could see them now!

So what's your all time Favourite City memory?

Well, one of them has to be 13th May 2012, but more on that later. I can’t pick just one, so I’m going to go for two. The 1975 League Cup Final and the winning overhead kick goal from Dennis Tueart. And City’s 4-3 win over Tottenham in the FA Cup fourth round in 2004. I was hosting a satellite TV show called Flipside TV on the night of the game. The programme was live for about three hours with three other guests watching a TV each and flicking around the channels and commenting on them. I made sure that one of the guests kept me up to date on the score. When City were 3-0 down at half time I said “don’t worry. They are going to win 4-3.” The next hour was mad.

Do you have a favourite all time City player?

When I was a kid I paid 20p for Joe Corrigan’s autograph at a school fete, and my mum and dad used to go to Colin Bell’s restaurant in Whitefield every now and then, but (as someone who is keen, but in truth doesn’t know much about football) I think I’ll go for Shaun Goater just because I always liked “feed the goat and he will score”.

Who is your favourite current player?

Yaya Toure.

Do you manage to get to many games?

No. In fact… and if you want to reject this interview and throw me out I will completely understand… I have never seen City play live. When I was very young my dad took me to see Prestwich Heys and occasionally Bury, but we never managed the big games! And now I live in London (ok, ok, sorry.) Tickets cost a fortune don’t they? I have only ever been to one Premiership match and that was thanks to my wife, Zoe. Her bosses invited the two of us to a swanky corporate thing at the Emirates to see Arsenal beat West Brom 2-0. We got prawn sandwiches and everything!

Do you think money is ruining football. Ticket prices have been talked about a lot lately and also the re-arranging of fixtures for TV?

Yes and no. I think City offer the best deal going don’t they? Particularly for Season Ticket holders… so that’s a no. I can’t help but be partisan on this one: when clubs like Chelsea bought their success it was ok to complain, but when City got a bit of money to spend it’s “Yes!!!”
I’m not the person to ask on re-arranging fixtures… other than someone needs to take a long hard look at the 2022 world Cup.

How did you feel when Mancini's reign came to end? Do you think it was the right time for a change?

It was awful. It was sad. He had done so much for the club. At the time I was appalled at how he was treated. But what do I know? (I felt bad about Mark Hughes too. ) Mancini was great and loved and his parting gesture in the MEN was perfect. I always called him Roberto Manciti.

Manuel Pellegrini.....Do you think he is the right man for the job?

He clearly is. There must be something in this holistic approach. He is a graceful man and he’s created a graceful and deadly team.

Where were you on the 13th May 2012 when Sergio Aguero scored the goal that won us the title?

Ha! I was sitting at home going mental in front of the radio. There was an inevitability about it. It just had to be. I say sitting… I was leaping around, standing, sitting, swearing, cheering. There was something just perfect about it happening in extra time, United standing around and waiting.

Are there any players you would love to see pull on a city shirt?

That’s too knowledgeable a question for me. Is Franny Lee past it now?

On A personal note you have had a long career in Tv. What has been the highlight for?

We once did a brief sketch with Graham Taylor but let’s draw a veil over that one. Linking TV with football I did enjoy going on Soccer AM the weekend before the FA Cup Final between City and Wigan . I got to hold the Cup, City didn’t. That wasn’t so good.
Another highlight is yet to come. I love Pointless on BBC1. It’s my favourite ever show (possibly). Me and Trev have been on it once and we went out in the 2nd Round. We have been invited back and the show will go out on a Saturday night sometime later this year. I really hope we do better this time.

So who does Trevor support?

Southampton.

And finally.....Who do you think will win the Premier League title this year?

City.

Thanks Simon. It's been great chatting with you.
