Not In My Lifetime Fans Interview: Richard Barter
Saturday, 12th Jul 2014 12:52

Our next Not In My Lifetime fan's interview comes from Richard Barter.

1) When did you become a City fan and why?

1973 at my new school in Southport. 2 kids approached me and told me I could hang out with them if I was a City fan. Seemed like a good idea. Little did I know what a key decision that was in my life!

2) What is your favourite City moment of all time/most treasured memory?

Sorry, an obvious one. Favourite City moment has to be Paul Dickov’s equalizer at Wembley. A lifetime of agony, disappointment and frustration wiped out in a moment of sheer ecstacy. No Dickov95, no Aguero93. My calves were black and blue for weeks! I’d flown over from Canada, was lucky enough to blag a ticket in London, stayed til the end (always do) and flew home the next day after 2 hours sleep on a spinning plane!

Most treasured memory. Maybe taking my kids to their first ever match at City and seeing their eyes gawp open when they walked into the stadium and saw the pitch and the stands. The club also arranged for us all to go down to pitch level where we had our picture taken with Moonchester and Moonbeam. City is a special club in what it continues to do for its supporters.A true family club. The match that followed (0-0 V Charlton) was awful.

3) If you could bring back a former City player into this team who would it be and why?

Imagine the passion of Mike Doyle alongside Vinny and Zabs in a derby….or maybe Georgi Kinkladze or Ali Bernarbia alongside Spanish Dave and Sergio…

4) Manuel Pellegrini, Your opinion please?

I was upset at the time that Roberto was fired, but I understand the direction of the club under Txiki and Ferran. Manuel is calm and class personified. The players love him, the squad is harmonious and no longer making headlines for the wrong reasons. To win the league in his first season was beyond my expectations. He has the chance to build a dynasty now. 10/10.

5) Best and worst moments of last season?

Best — Capital One Cup final. I’d flown over for the week from Toronto, and after a few hours at the Green Man, I greatly enjoyed the second half performance , having feared a typical City outcome after the first half!
Worst- a few days later —the defeat at home vs Wigan. Had we shown up that day for the QF match vs Uwe’s boys, I’m sure we’d have gone on to win the FA Cup too ( getting greedy eh!)

6) Transfers have already been made, but anyone else you would like to come in?

Mehdi Benatia as he wants to play for us and that Roma defence was solid last season. I’d like to see Karim Rekik and Nasty compete for the job too tho. Otherwise I think we’re solid and I’d like to see Emyr Huws and John Guidetti see some playing time this year too.

7) Any players you would happily drive to his new club?

Honestly no.

Favourite current player?

Has to be the man..Pablo Zabaleta. He was born and raised a Manc wasn’t he? Followed very closely by Vincent Kompany-everything you want in a captain. A true leader of men and class personified.

9) Any players that have been let go this summer that you would have liked to stay?

Sad to see Joleon go. Great character in the dressing room and a solid defender.

10) Who was your first footballing hero and who are your favourite all time player/s?

First hero was King Colin tho I never saw him in his peak. Loved Joe Corrigan too. Favourite all time player is tough. From childhood, Peter Barnes and Denis Tueart were my favourites. Uwe Rosler, Paul Dickov, the Goat and Andy Morrison from the years of despair stand out as does the legend Berti Glauber for different reasons! I actually saw him play recently at Toronto FC in an MLS match. Couldn’t believe my eyes!

11) And finally, What are your expectations for the new season?

Retaining the title will be tough but we’ll be there or thereabouts. As long as we carry on playing according to the club’s traditions of attacking football and thump united twice, I’m happy tho. Never thought I’d see us win a pot in my lifetime so it’s all gravy now!CTID
