Title Defence Starts With A Win
Sunday, 17th Aug 2014 19:35

City sealed victory with a goal in each half on an emotional day in Newcastle. Vincent Kompany and Fabricio Coloccini laid wreaths in the centre circle ahead of a minute’s silence to remember John Alder and Liam Sweeney, who lost their lives in pre-season during the MH17 tragedy last month.

City made a bright start to the game with some impressive passing and Dzeko and Nasri both testing the Newcastle keeper. Newcastle showed signs that the afternoon was not going to go all City's way when Remy Cabella chipped just over the crossbar.

Silva then fired City into a 38th-minute lead, making the most of Edin Dzeko's intelligent back-heel, he slotted the ball brilliantly into the net.

Newcastle responded well as the second half started with Gouffran testing Hart who responded back with a smart save.

Jovetic then sent over a clever pass to Dzeko who headed narrowly over.

Ayoze Perez came on for Newcastle and had an immediate impact when his shot was deflected agonizedly close.

City had large spells of pressure but Newcastle continued to look for an opening.

The game was then sealed after Aguero came on for Dzeko with seven minutes remaining. Deep into to stoppage time his initial shot was deflected by Krul before he curled the ball into the net.
