City To Do It The Hard Way Again
Wednesday, 1st Oct 2014 09:04

Manuel Pellegrini said his side need to sharpen up their act after they were held 1-1 by AS Roma in their second Champions League Group E game. So City are now left facing another uphill battle to advance in the Champions League after the unconvincing draw.

City went ahead in the fourth minute when their former defender Maicon put his arm around Aguero and pulled him down leaving referee Bjorn Kuipers no choice but to award the penalty which the Argentine swept home, sending Roma's stand-in keeper Lukasz Skorupski the wrong way. Maicon was booked but no red card.

Maicon almost made immediate amends for his blunder as he latched onto a lofted Totti pass and smashed a fierce shot against the woodwork.

The veteran Brazilian went through on goal again moments later but was flagged offside.

City felt they were denied another penalty when Aguero collided with Manolas and they were caught napping as Totti struck his equaliser after 23 minutes.

The veteran was afforded huge space as he latched onto a Nainggolan pass and he took full advantage as he closed in on Hart. Hart slipped before rushing towards the oncoming Tottii who then flicked a deft shot over the goalkeeper.

The landmark goal meant Totti, who celebrated his latest birthday last weekend, had eclipsed Ryan Giggs as the oldest goalscorer in the Champions League.

City had another penalty appeal turned down when Jesus Navas' low cross struck the hand of the sliding Manolas and Vincent Kompany's follow-up shot flew over.

Gervinho again showed great pace to get behind City's sluggish back line but Hart beat away his shot.

Roma maintained their pace after the break, with Totti driving across goal and Pjanic shooting at Hart before curling another effort wide.

City seemed to lift themselves as substitute Milner drove wide and Fernandinho almost got into a shooting position before on-loan Newcastle player Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa barged him away.

City sent on Lampard for Dzeko just before the hour and he showed his goal threat with a long-range shot that Lukasz Skorupski tipped away. Silva also showed good control outside the box but poked a long-range effort wide.

City finished the strongest but Silva flicked a good chance wide - and was offside anyway - and substitute Stevan Jovetic twice drove over.

The result left City third with just one point from their opening two games in Group E and already five behind leaders Bayern Munich. They next face CSKA Moscow in crucial back-to-back games starting with a trip to the Russian capital in three weeks.
