City Crash Out
Thursday, 30th Oct 2014 12:50

City suffered a shock League Cup defeat at the hands of a reinvigorated Newcastle United, who reached the quarterfinals with a 2-0 away win on Wednesday that left the holders nursing the wounds of a bruising past eight days.

Ryan Taylor was making his first Newcastle appearance since August 2012 after a long-term knee problem quickly made an impact an impact for United.

Taylor robbed Fernandinho in midfield, which freed 18-year-old Aarons to run through and slot the ball between Willy Caballero's legs from a narrow angle on the right.

City received a further blow three minutes later when Silva was forced off after injuring his left knee in an early tangle with Taylor.

Silva was replaced by a fit again Nasri who teed up Jovetic who volleyed the ball. Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliot had to parry and visiting captain Fabricio Coloccini then sliced the ball against his own post.

Jovetic then saw two further efforts blocked by Jack Colback and Paul Dummett, who cleared.

Two minutes later and it was City goalkeeper Caballero who was tested, this time from Daryl Janmaat who was allowed to ponder forward before releasing a fierce shot. Caballero got both hands to the effort.

The home side came closer still to a goal on 27 minutes from an unusual source. An Aleksandar Kolarov cross was met by the flashing boot of Fabricio Coloccini who meant the ball to go one way and it went the other, grazing Elliot’s post on the way past.

In to the second half and City left-back Aleksandar Kolarov was fortunate not to concede a penalty for felling Obertan, Pellegrini sent on Jesus Navas and Sergio Aguero.
But it was a Newcastle substitute who delivered the killer blow, with Sissoko dragging the ball away from Fernandinho and then bursting past Sagna before coolly stabbing home.
Taylor completed a memorable return by blocking on the line from Edin Dzeko in the 85th minute, as Newcastle secured a first ever win at the Etihad and sent the City crashing out.
