I'm glad Hilly has chosen the 'no proper 2nd Keeper on the books' like he's done in the past. Wasted wage which we can't afford. If Lillis gets injured you just get replacement on loan. As for coaching Lillis? He's been in the game long enough now to not need coaching - he just needs to keep himself fit and agile. |  |

Not all professional footballers make the best coaches.
Imagine Cristiano Ronaldo in his 40's coaching a league 2 side, experience he has to give but ignorance he has too much of. World Class players would expect too much upon a player when coaching all because he could do it.
Obviously its not a fact but an opinion.
Ray Clemence England no1 and became England first team goalkeeper coach all because of experience and coaching ability.
Who you were does not defy who you will be, it only gives you a higher stepping stone to become a pro coach because people know you.
My first boss played u18s at Kidderminster, no pace, no skill, not great ability but he could stick by a player and be a good defender on his day is now the main technical & skill coach at Stoke Academy (a VERY GOOD academy in its right)...

its the academy 442Dale, they have a completely different philosophy. Pass and Move like all academies are (and should be) coached these days.

I don't think Hilly actually likes having to have a single keeper on the books.

Exactly, Pulis has done what he must to survive on the premier league & over the years has slowly changed the philosophy.
However to the original point, just because your not as good as the player your coaching does not mean a thing, as long as the coach can spot the technical faults and correct them slowly over time & also keeping the player on his best form mentality then your worthy of coaching anybody (regardless of your own ability). | | | |

The problem is that the game has moved on. Stoke fans see the likes of Swansea and West Brom etc staying up, spending less and playing, for the most part, entertaining football. Stoke's performances against United and Villa this season were the worse I've seen since another long-ball merchant Mcleish was at Villa last season.
A lot of teams play football these days - decent ball-playing footballers are no longer exclusively for the wealthier so-called 'top' teams.
The standard has raised generally. I don't know how old you are, but anyone who watched football in the 1980s and 1990s will likely agree that the standard of players has generally improved throughout the leagues.
The quality of Dale's play improved markedly under Hill and that was down to coaching, mentality and not accepting the approach that because we're not a 'top' team we have to rely on physicality alone.
Long-ball/physical tactics is essentially lazy coaching. It doesn't require a lot to sign a big forward and drill the team to get the ball too him as quickly as possible.
Good coaches increasingly show playing football can be achieved on a budget.
Stoke fans in the end were saying 'ok we're staying up but I don't want to actually watch Stoke play'. That's where the pragmatic long-ball approach hits the buffers. Interesting argument - Wigan fans are desperate for Martinez to stay whereas Stoke fans seem happy Pullis has gone. Stoke are still in the Prem and Wigan got relegated. Fans, for the most part, aren't pragmatic. They actually like paying money to watch a good and exciting game of football. | |
