TOM YOUNG: Pompey's crisis brings out the best and worst in people...

Despite these hard times ar Portsmouth FC, many have shown incredible character and resolve. Manager Michael Appleton is one of many.

If he chose to leave the club, arguably in its worst situation in a long time, would be understood by many Portsmouth fans and even football fans in general. However, instead he has replied “I will not walk away”. I commend this man who has had to put up with many things he does not deserve.

His stature if anything will only rise during these dark times if he continues with an attitude and he may well end up adored by many Pompey fans.

Others that should be commended include thousands of Pompey fans who have offered as much as possible financially to keep the cherished club alive, along with Zoe Ashdown, who arguably has no direct obligation to worry at all especially now that her other half, Jamie Ashdown has now been released by the club. Nonetheless she worked very hard to persuade various playing staff to sign up to the Supporters Trust’s proposal. She is another person who deserves praise should the club survive.

Unfortunately though, these times can not only uncover positives within one’s personality but also negatives. Come forward Nkwankwo Kanu, Tal Ben Haim, and Aaron Mokoena. Three men whose pockets are most certainly much heavier at this point compared to the time when they joined the club.

Admittedly, the decision to compromise on their contracts or anything similar is completely up to them and due to the legality of contracts. There is no changing the fact that they have to be honoured until any of the individuals choose to decide otherwise.

However, Tal Ben Haim’s lack of activity has been of no surprise to me. Attempts to offload him is a story that has been dragging for what seems an eternity. One of the individuals that have surprised me though is Kanu. A man who was certainly adored by me, and possibly most Portsmouth fans, has arguably tattered his image amongst many. He seemed to be one of the last remaining genuine lovers of the game disregarding the financial aspects. Perhaps I was wrong.

The likelihood of him really needing a financial boost after spells at Ajax, Arsenal and Pompey would have maintained his bank account. Surely if he really loves the club and its fans he’ll know what to do but like I said, the worst times can show the worst in people.
