Wallace to the rescue in Pompey's opener

Pompey began the new League Two season by sharing the spoils at Exeter.

They had Jed Wallace's 74th-minute strike to thank for rescuing a point in a classic game of two halves.

Pompey were a little off the pace in the first half and trailed to a 26th-minute opener by the home side. Tom Nichols was the scorer, taking advantage when the Blues defence was slow to clear the danger.

But they were a different proposition after the interval and deserved to be level - and the longer the game went on, the longer it looked they might snatch victory.

Wallace scored after a collecting a lovely pass by Nigel Atangana - who impressed as a sub in his first appearance following his move from the Hawks - and cutting inside to fire home a shot.

Exeter were happier to hear the final whistle and Pompey can take some positives from the way they perked up after their under-par first-half show.

Boss Andy Awford told The News: 'I asked them (at half-time) to up the tempo with the ball and take less touches, get it wider, retain it a lot better. I think overall in the second half we were lot better and unfortunate not to win the game in the end.’
