A goal six minutes from time by Andy Sandell gave Newport the points at Fratton Park to end Pompey's unbeaten league start.

In a game in which 10 players were booked, with the referee incurring the wrath of the home fans on more than one occasion, Pompey were never at their best.

Jed Wallace went closest for the Blues but it looked like it was going to end goalless until Sandell somehow found the net with a free kick from a wide angle as the game neared its end.

Boss Andy Awford said: 'Newport came with a gameplan and they frustrated us. But we had two fantastic chances.

‘Ryan Taylor and Craig Westcarr both had good opportunities to score and we hoped it would be more. In previous games, when we have had chances, we’ve taken them. Not this time unfortunately.
