Pompey boss Andy Awford couldn't hide his delight after his team bounced back from the weekend's defeat to Newport to claimn their second cup scalp of the season.

They followed up their Capitol One Cup victory over Peterborough, of League One, by disposing of Yeovil on their own patch with a 3-1 JP Trophy first round victory.

Jed Wallace's double and Craig Westcarr's sublime finish saw off the westcountrymen, giving the Blues a place in Saturday's second round draw. Johnny Ertl played a starring role with one of his best Pompey displays to date.

Awford told The News: ‘I’ve just said to the players that is the attitude and mentality that we have to have going into league games, cup games and every game. We have got to make sure that we earn the right to play football.

‘We dug in first-half. We matched them and went toe-to-toe with them - we didn’t get bullied, we didn’t get outmuscled. We had a lot of young players out there and it was really important that we stood up to them and we did.

‘And then the quality showed through with Westcarr, Wallace, (Miles) Storey and the more flair players.’
