Pompey boss on fine line between success and failure

Pompey head to York on Saturday being warned it's a fine line between success and failure in League Two.

Manager Andy Awford pointed to York's many draws - and the little daylight existing between more than half the teams in the current league table - as evidence it's easy to move up quickly, or fall just as speedily.

He told the Pompey website: 'They’ve drawn six of their games so you could argue that they’ve been close to winning games, but you can also say that they’ve been close to losing as well. They had a really good end to last season, but haven’t quite managed to take that momentum into the current campaign.

'But it’s all about us. We can’t control what York do and the focus this week has been on us and making sure we do our job properly. There are fine lines in football and the league’s very compressed — there are only three points separating sixth from 16th.

'Put some back-to-back wins together and then — as we’ve seen with Southend — you can shoot up the table. If we do our jobs — and manage to stick the ball in the back of the net this week — then I’m confident we’ll win.'

Pompey had a nightmare at Bootham Crescent last season, losing 4-2 in a terrible display illuminated only by a Jed Wallace wondergoal, but Awford said that result counted for nothing this weekend.
