Blues are not so shrewd against Shrews
Blues are not so shrewd against Shrews

Pompey have now picked up just two points from their past six away league games after a narrow defeat at Shrewsbury.

It took a somewhat freak winner by Connor Goldson - think of the Ronalidinho goal that knocked England out of the 2002 World Cup - to beat Pompey and bring them back to earth following their midweek win over Stevenage.

Jed Wallace gave Pompey the lead in the third minute from the penalty spot after Mickey Demetriou handled a corner.

It was the best of starts but 11 minutes level Pompey were pegged back when James Wesolowski took advantage of a free-kick that was blocked but not clears. Goldson’s winner came 18 minutes from time as he struck what appeared to be an attempted cross towards the far post from more than 30 yards out as he advanced from the right-back position. There will be the inevitable questions over whether Paul Jones should have kept it out.

Pompey boss Andy Awford said he felt his team had been worth a point.

Carlisle visit Fratton Park next Saturday, when once again the pressure will be on Awford's men to deliver.
