Tubbs wants to propel Pompey to play-off shot

Matt Tubbs is setting his sights on scoring the goals that can push Pompey towards the League Two play-offs.

The 30-year-old said he had no doubts about deciding to join Pompey after his scoring visit to Fratton with AFC Wimbledon on Boxing Day.

The new man told the club website: 'I played here on Boxing Day and there were 17,500 inside the ground — this place is massive. It’s a fantastic club, we’ve got a new training ground and I knew a few of the lads already from previous clubs. There were other offers, but this place appealed to me massively and I can’t wait to get started.

'I’m glad that the move didn’t drag out over the whole of January. I wanted to get it done as soon as possible. I’ve had my first training session with the manager and his coaching staff and it was high-intensity, which is what you want as a player.

'There’s a lot of healthy competition for places here which means you can’t afford to take your foot off the gas. But I’m confident in my ability and I can already see that the lads here are going to create a lot of chances for me.

'I’ve always said that sometimes things won’t go your way, but there’s no excuse to not work hard. If I give 100 per cent in every game then I can create my own luck and hopefully score a lot of goals for Pompey.'

He added: 'I’ve not come here to be part of a mid-table League Two squad. The calibre of this squad is great and there’s no reason why we can’t push towards the play-offs.'

Tubbs is set to go straight into the side at Newport on Saturday, when Paul Robinson will play his first game as a permanent member of the Blues squad.

Robinson has joined Pompey after being released from his Millwall contract and told The News: : ‘It was an extremely straightforward decision from my point of view. When I signed on loan initially there was a possibility of making it longer, but I think it took coming on loan for the situation at Millwall to become clear to me.

‘In the summer I had a couple of League One clubs in for me, while this month a League Two club made a firm offer. But once Pompey offered me something permanent my mind was made up.'
